Work on the ambitious Rs1 lakh crore Ahmedabad-Mumbai Bullet train project, the country's first high-speed rail corridor, seems to be picking up speed. The groundbreaking ceremony of the project, which involves construction of a 505-km line using Japan's Shinkansen technology, and was first proposed way back in 2004, is expected in the current year itself.
A recent report in Nikkei Asian Review said that the Indian government has brought forward the groundbreaking ceremony to within 2017. The report said that trains could be running between the two cities at a speed of 320 km per hour by 2023.
Nikkei report said that detailed design study for the high-speed project has formally begun. On completion, the Bullet train will reduce the travel time between Ahmedabad and Mumbai from the current eight hours to just over two hours.
A senior Gujarat government official confirmed that there is a lot of movement related to the Bullet train project of late.
"The project's construction work is expected to start in 2018 and is estimated to be completed in five years," he said.
The timeline for starting work and making the Bullet train operational may not be coincidental, as the next Lok Sabha elections will take place in 2019 and the one after that in 2024.
Chief secretary JN Singh said that the Gujarat government holds 25% equity in the ambitious project, but primary execution of the project is being done by the railways.
The cost of the Bullet train project was originally estimated at close to Rs98,000 crore, of which the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) would fund 81% or nearly Rs80,000 crore. The remaining funds would be contributed by Indian Railways, and the governments of Gujarat and Maharashtra.
Minister of state for railways Rajen Gohain said in the Parliament recently that the cost of the corridor is expected to go up by about Rs10,000 crore due to the decision to construct it as a fully elevated project. The decision is aimed at enhancing safety and reducing land requirement for the project.
The terminal in Ahmedabad is planned to come up at the existing Sabarmati railway station, while in Mumbai, the plan is to build it under the Bandra Kurla Complex.
An engineering marvel
The Bullet train project, which is expected to revolutionise country's transportation infrastructure, will be an engineering marvel. Even as the government is mulling the entire project to be an elevated one, around 7 km stretch of the line between Virar in Mumbai and Thane will pass under the sea. This will be the country's first undersea tunnel.
As per feasibility studies, the line will have 12 stations between Ahmedabad and Mumbai. The trains will make halts at Surat and Vadodara. The travel time between the two cities will come down to two hours and seven minutes, which is almost one-fourth of the current travel time.
The planned fare for the route will be around Rs3,300, one-and-a-half times the price of a AC class I ticket currently. It is expected to carry about 35,800 passengers a day initially.
The trains will run on the same 1,435 mm track gauge as Japan's Shinkansen bullet trains

No it is 200km/h. Borderline HSR in BG fastest capable loco we have is WAP5 max 225km/h with upgrades so new Locos will be needed for greater speeds.

Elevated corridor impractical for long distances because they are costly, Japan can use elevated corridors everywhere because their distances are small. But, we have long distances between cities, so best option would be to use High Speed Trainers which can fit various gauge like HSR Talgo trainers or ICF can be used to make our own BG HSR trainer.

They are not going to extend dedicated HSR, instead they are going to build an upgraded BG HSR corridor which is little less expensive.

Brand new LHB rake spotted at Nagpur halted on PF 2. I could not take more details about it. But i think it was heading towards Wardha end. The rake was fully locked and marked as 172XX/C series. I could not see zone markings as I took picture from overbridge with limited view.

Indian Railways will go for global shopping to acquire high speed locomotives with a Rs 500 crore project to run trains at 200 km per hour on Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Kolkata routes.
Speed is the latest matra for railways as it is going ahead with the action plan to upgrade Delhi-Kolkata and Delhi-Mumbai rail corridors enabling the track fit for 200 kmph train run.
“We will float the global tender for acquiring 10 high speed electric locomotives, which can haul trains at 200 kmph and beyond, from the market shortly,” said a senior Railway
Ministry official.
At present, Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Duronto trains are running up to 130 kmph. Only one train, Gatimaan Express, is running at 160 kmph between Delhi and Agra.
“The transfer of technology of the high power locomotives and its maintenance will be the responsibility of the successful bidder, besides supplying 10 locos to railways,” said the official.
The Rs 500 crore project involves purchase of high speed locomotives, transfer of technology and maintenance for 13 years as per the bidding requirement.
The high power locomotives are expected to haul 22-24 coaches train at 200 kmph on Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Kolkata routes to reduce the travel time.
In order to match the loco capacity, railways has started the manufacturing of Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches with speed potential of 200 kmph.
The high speed LHB coaches are about to be turned out from Rail Coach Factory at Kapurthala.
Besides Talgo coaches, which are also meant for higher speed on the existing tracks, are likely to be hauled with these high speed locomotives.

Delhi - Mumbai and Delhi - Kolkata are not entirely flat. Let's split both of these routes into sections and examine..
1. Delhi - Mumbai
NDLS - KOTA : Flat, high speed section.
- RTM : Largely flat, but the terrain just begins to vary as you enter MP. Mild to moderate gradients are present.
RTM - BRC : Varying terrain, not so flat. Moderate gradients up to 1:150 can be found. MPS is 110 km/h as of now.
BRC - BCT : Almost completely flat, with hardly any undulations. MPS is 120 km/h.
2. Delhi - Kolkata
NDLS - CNB : Flat, congested, yet high speed section. Trains operate at 130 km/h max although it is said to withstand 140 km/h as well.
CNB - ALD : Flat, congested, 130-fit section.
ALD - MGS : Flat, highly congested section. Higher MPS does not matter as you're gonna crawl your way through this section unless your train is a Rajdhani.
MGS - GAYA : Fit for 130 km/h. Largely flat but mild to moderate undulations may be found.
GAYA - DHN : Again fit for 130 km/h. Moderate undulations (1:200, 1:150 grades) are present. But there is Gurpa Gujhandi ghat section where the gradients are steep. Ruling gradient is 1:80.
DHN - HWH : Fit for 130 km/h. Largely flat with mild to moderate undulations at certain places.
