Feb 05 2017 (06:36)   Kudla Express likely to run via Shravanabelagola

Kudla Express, the day train between Bengaluru and Mangaluru via Mysuru announced by the then Railway Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda, is now likely to be operated via Shravanabelagola by March-end. The move would drastically reduce the distance and time taken for the journey, from 447 km to 340 km and from 13 hours to eight-nine hours.
As per the timetable published in 2014, the yet-to-be introduced Train No. 16575 was to leave Bengaluru at 8.30 a.m. to reach Mangaluru Central at 9.15 p.m. and Train No. 16576 to leave Mangaluru Central at 6.30 a.m. to reach Bengaluru at 7.30 p.m. via Mysuru.
to conditions
However, the re-routing of the train is subject to several conditions. The first being authorisation by the Commissioner of Railway Safety to operate passenger trains on the newly constructed Nelamangala-Shravanabelagola line. The second being availability of coaches to form the rake for the train and the third is concurrence by the Railway Board to change the route.
South Western Railway’s Chief Public Relations Officer E. Vijaya told The Hindu that the South Western Railway was planning to run the train via Shravanabelagola. Since the zone is facing shortage of coaches to form a rake, the process may take some time; but by March-end the train should run, she said.
Via Mysuru initially
R.L. Dias, president of the Railway Yatri Sangha, Udupi, who has filed a public interest writ petition before the High Court of Karnataka, seeking a direction to South Western Railway to run the train as announced in the budget, said that the zone has told the court that it would start the new service by March 1. Since its route and timetable have been published, South Western Railway cannot change it on its own and would initially have to run the train via Mysuru itself. Thereafter, the board’s concurrence has to be taken to re-route it, he said.
Ms. Vijaya also concurred and said that South Western Railway would have to solicit opinion from beneficiaries of the train. Since Mangaluru comes under Southern Railway and change in timings is involved, that zone’s concurrence too is required, she said.

Most of the route has decent MPS. The bottleneck is the the Shiradi Ghat section between SKLR-SBHR. This section has 1:37 gradients for 55km and a PSR of 30kmph. So trains usually take 2-3 hours for crossing this section, particularly longer in the night time.
This route is a heaven for AC bus operators, but mostly due to lack of trains ( timings do play a role, but as of now lack of trains is a bigger problem than time of travel). The route is also infamous for bus lobbies stopping SWR from introducing new trains on the route. With the new timings, ( if SWR does implement what it is promising ), the train will
have excellent demand. Buses cover the route in 6-7 hours ( I am not sure if there are any faster ones, I have traveled only in these), but there is more than enough demand for trains between the two cities.

Today (09:36)   ‘Deaths this year statistically lower’

In the wake of Thursday’s horrific train accident, Railway authorities have claimed that there has actually been better policing and increased awareness among the public, which has helped bring down the number of deaths caused on the tracks in 2016.
The number of deaths reported due to trespass, suicide, and falling down in railway property has come down by 123. This year, the total number of deaths was 1,297 against 1,410 last year.
A senior official of the Government Railway Police (GRP) said though no study has been carried to find the reasons
for the downtrend, better coordination with officials of the RPF and reaching out to the commuters through awareness camps and strictly enforcing rules have brought down the death rate. The senior official also acknowledged that better civic sense among commuters helped reduce accidents.
The figure shows reduction in deaths in several important railway stations in the city, including Egmore, Korukkupet, Perambur and Avadi. In Korukkupet, the number of deaths has come down to 91 this year from 116 in 2015.
Similarly, in Egmore, the total number of deaths has seen a dip from 92 (2015) to 75 (2016) and in Avadi from 84 to 61.
However, the GRP should be concerned about spike in the death rates in a few important railway stations in south Chennai. In the Tambaram limit, the number of deaths recorded was 132 in 2016 against 106 the previous year.

Major accidents with more casualties continue to hog media limelight for months where as large number of minor accidents with no or nominal casualties go unnoticed.
It is interesting to note that one major accident with 50 casulties gets noticed and is in lime light for months where as more than 100 minor accidents with total casualties much above 100 during the same period go almost unnoticed!!
