Build the bullet train with 1676mm Broad Gauge^~   1 news posts

Work on the ambitious Rs1 lakh crore Ahmedabad-Mumbai Bullet train project, the country's first high-speed rail corridor, seems to be picking up speed. The groundbreaking ceremony of the project, which involves construction of a 505-km line using Japan's Shinkansen technology, and was first proposed way back in 2004, is expected in the current year itself.
A recent report in Nikkei Asian Review said that the Indian government has brought forward the groundbreaking ceremony to within 2017. The report said that trains could be running between the two cities at a speed of 320 km per hour by 2023.
Nikkei report said that detailed design study for the high-speed project has formally begun. On completion, the Bullet train will reduce the travel time between Ahmedabad and Mumbai from the current eight hours to just over two hours.
A senior Gujarat government official confirmed that there is a lot of movement related to the Bullet train project of late.
"The project's construction work is expected to start in 2018 and is estimated to be completed in five years," he said.
The timeline for starting work and making the Bullet train operational may not be coincidental, as the next Lok Sabha elections will take place in 2019 and the one after that in 2024.
Chief secretary JN Singh said that the Gujarat government holds 25% equity in the ambitious project, but primary execution of the project is being done by the railways.
The cost of the Bullet train project was originally estimated at close to Rs98,000 crore, of which the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) would fund 81% or nearly Rs80,000 crore. The remaining funds would be contributed by Indian Railways, and the governments of Gujarat and Maharashtra.
Minister of state for railways Rajen Gohain said in the Parliament recently that the cost of the corridor is expected to go up by about Rs10,000 crore due to the decision to construct it as a fully elevated project. The decision is aimed at enhancing safety and reducing land requirement for the project.
The terminal in Ahmedabad is planned to come up at the existing Sabarmati railway station, while in Mumbai, the plan is to build it under the Bandra Kurla Complex.
An engineering marvel
The Bullet train project, which is expected to revolutionise country's transportation infrastructure, will be an engineering marvel. Even as the government is mulling the entire project to be an elevated one, around 7 km stretch of the line between Virar in Mumbai and Thane will pass under the sea. This will be the country's first undersea tunnel.
As per feasibility studies, the line will have 12 stations between Ahmedabad and Mumbai. The trains will make halts at Surat and Vadodara. The travel time between the two cities will come down to two hours and seven minutes, which is almost one-fourth of the current travel time.
The planned fare for the route will be around Rs3,300, one-and-a-half times the price of a AC class I ticket currently. It is expected to carry about 35,800 passengers a day initially.
The trains will run on the same 1,435 mm track gauge as Japan's Shinkansen bullet trains

Agree with the emergency scenario. It will always be beneficial to have BG locos ready to operate on the track in case of emergencies.
Center of gravity and capacity are not really a problem. Standard gauge is barely 20cm narrower than broad gauge. There won't be any effect on carrying capacity as pretty much the same coach shells can be used for both gauges, just on different bogies. Center of gravity is also more of a design parameter and not really dependent on the gauge. Many American locomotives and rolling stock are heavier and taller than their Indian counterparts and run at higher speeds on Standard gauge. For light-axle load train sets, ride quality will be
identical between both, with SG being slightly cheaper.
Standard gauge was never widely used in India. They were mostly used around ports and on tramways but there were no long routes. All of them were converted to metre or broad gauge to avoid trans-shipments and additional equipment. I am not sure about a history of failures. It will be useful if you can share any information about the same.
Since most of the high speed rail is on standard gauge, it would be a very cheap alternative for us. There isn't much scope of BG high speed railway anywhere else in the world, so developing a BG high speed train set would be a herculean R&D effort, and will take several years to complete. Using SG would let us use any of the numerous existing HSR technologies already implemented elsewhere.

In Russia Broad Gauge bullet trains are used. And also climate conditions are unique. Herculan effort is good since it will be a good boost to make in India. I think this bullet train corridor will also be the last SG bullet train corridor and after this IR will start BG bullet train corridors

Russian high speed trains use the Russian gauge ( 1520mm) which is closer to the Standard gauge (1435mm) than the Indian Broad gauge ( 1676 mm ).
The technical expertise that we will acquire during the development will definitely be of great value, but using SG would be slightly better as we will have the scope to supply rolling stock to other railways in the world as well. The Indian BG is pretty much used only in Indian subcontinent and in Argentina (already considering a ToT from China for their HSR) and Chile, and it is probably safe to say that there isn't much scope for BG HSR's anywhere except India. A make in India venture on
the SG would however, can potentially open up an international market for us much like DLW and ICF did several decades ago.
Climate, terrain etc do play a role, but most of the reasons the British chose Broad gauge were due to rolling stock restrictions and general conceptions about the traffic in India, which have changed since then and many of them not relevant anymore, and the differences are no longer clear. Besides, the HSR line would be in a very controlled environment with fencing, elevated tracks, minimal curves and gradients etc and as such will not be affected by the terrain at all. So, the benefits of BG ( which may be substantial in typical operating conditions) will not be much in this case.

A hell of a parallel race between MFP bound Memu from Patliputra and Chhapra-Tata Express. The race started from LC Gate no 2(1st pic) and continued till outer.First Cpr-Tata badly overtaked my Memu at Nearly 60 when my Memu was at 40 kmph. But after few seconds Memu showed brutal acceleration and thrashed Wap4 led 18182 at flat 70.Race continued till Sonpur station. But atlast Memu wins the race because it was given precedence over 18182.A really exciting short journey it was.
