Another example of waste. A Gooty diesel hauling the train under wires to Mumbai.

Just out of curiosity, do you feel that running a diesel loco under wires for 962 kms not to mention the idle time before the next assignment where the loco's remain operational burning diesel compares with EOG operations ??
Fyi, EOG is now used as a back up on atleast Kalka Shatabdi & Mumbai Rajdhani as they mostly are allocated WAP 7 loco's with HOG fitted. Location also matters as trains that leave BCT are shunted into a dead end hence the EOG is started in the yard until the train leaves BCT & is later switched off soon after departure.

the delhi end, the loco is attached at the yard itself hence there is no need to even start the EOG. IR is stepping up the production of HOG loco's but like anurag said it will take time.

Yes if electric locos are available, sure they should be used. But I want to know is whether that "Gooty Diesel" is able to get the job done??? If yes, then I dont think its a wastage of fuel. As I have studied powerplant economics in my graduation, I came to know diesel engine is no waste and create less pollution than electric locos when you see the cost of coal involved and pollution created by thermal power plants.

agree... but the cost of diesel is main concern area.. n if the powerplant economics is considered, it there are hydel and nuclear plants available... n production of electricity is extensive thng as every one needs that... we can balance that by using electric loco (in railways case), cng vehicles etc etc...

It can be compared when you see the economics behind operating a diesel locomotive and that of electric locomotive. Yes at the time of idling, rich fuel-air mixture goes into the engine so at that time, electric is more efficient. Regarding eog, its efficiency depends on load of working. For bct rajdhani, eog is efficient but for trains like bpl-indb double decker and hwh-dhanbad dd, the same eog will consume same fuel for comparatively less load hence less efficient.
And thanks for info on operation of eog in bct rajdhani. :)

Railways operates round a year while hydel plants cannot operate throughout the year at same load. In summer, hydel plants will not be able to satisfy the needs of IR. For nuclear plants, its proportion is quite small compared to thermal plants. India is facing extreme scarcity of enriched uranium so these plants operate on per day basis. And cng vehicles are there in delhi and few more cities but all over India, petrol and diesel are chiefly consumed. Example if you observe the freight transportation, traders are preferring road transport rather than railways.

These days, apparently, users are quitting FaceBook in droves because...
