PUNE: Daily commuters will soon be able to take local trains to Daund as the much-awaited electrification of Pune-Daund railway track is expected to get over in 2015. About 70% of the work is complete including erection of electric poles along the track. Power stations at Yevat and Daund and laying of overhead high-tension wires is likely to be completed by August which will facilitate trial runs.
The electrification of Pune-Daund-Bhigvan track was proposed long back, but the actual work started in December 2012. Authorities had set a three-year target...
more... to complete it. Officials said that the administration is holding talks with the farmers whose lands are to be acquired for setting up the power stations. A schedule to operate blocks for laying overhead wires will be finalized soon. The work is being planned in phases to avoid major disturbances to daily schedules of trains, a senior officer told TOI.
The Pune-Daund-Bhigvan route is a part of Pune-Solapur rail link which further connects to Chennai and Bangalore. The link is vital as most long distance trains to southern parts are on this route. There was a long pending demand to complete electrification of Pune-Solapur section as the rail track between Mumbai-Lonavla and Pune is already electrified.
