The announcement of Railway Minister Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu that train tickets can be booked 120 days in advance is drawing criticism from various sections. It may be recalled that the advance reservation facility, which was earlier allowed 90 days ahead of the journey date, was reduced to 60 days in view of the problems faced by passengers.
Duvvada Railway Users’ Association secretary K. Eswar shot off letters to the Railway Minister, the Minister of State for Railways and the Chairman of the Railway Board opposing the move.
The advance reservation will not be...
more... useful for most passengers except during the festival season. One cannot plan four months in advance with their children studying in school/college and postponement of examinations. Employees cannot be sure of getting leave 120 days in advance. It will be useful only for travel agents.
Mr. Eswar has noted that the revenue earnings of the railways could decrease as middle class families, which cannot shell out money four months in advance, would look for alternative modes like buses.
