How much earthquake intensity (magnitude in Richter Scale) can the railway tracks in IR bear without being twisted and mutilated??? And what is the magnitude of earthquake in which trains can run safely?
I am curious because of the recent incidents of earthquakes in Nepal and India.

I feel that Metropolitan Cities and IR tracks can withstand tremors between 1 to 3 on a Richter Scale. Anything above 2.5 or 3 may cause the tracks to be dislocated. This is my estimate as I am not a Seismologist. The tracks between Ranganj and Dhanbad have been under caution due to illegal coal mining that has made the soil extremely soft. Trains are advised to run with caution so I feel that a 130 Kmph MPS is only required between Dankuni and Raniganj, the other part of the route being between Dhanbad and Ghaziabad!!!! :-p

I felt / experienced the above earthquake only from a distance of about 15 km from the epicentre which was really terrible.
At this distance and magnitude a running train even at a lower speed will surely be derailed. (click here

@1471179-7  @guest
The tracks between Raniganj & Asansol, and between Mugma and Chotambana station are particularly susceptible, because of the mass illegal mining.
You won't believe but the majority of people around Mugma Station earn their livelihood by Illegal Coal Mining!

You experienced an earthquake, with only 15km from the epicentre, must have been a traumatic experience!

These days, apparently, users are quitting FaceBook in droves because...
