Now a days Konkan railway has introduced a new numbering system for coach position in their stations.The new numbering system is entirely opposite to what Indian railways has been following years together.In Konkan stations,coach positions are given fixed numbers such that MUMBAI end (north) is given as 1,2,3....... and 24 at the southern end.This position is common for both directions of travel and for both platforms.Whereas in stations of other railway zones,coach positions are numbered as per the direction of the train.Now the problem is, in Konkan stations,you can not predict your coach position as per your experience or by following IR chart,because the coach position in chart preparation and numbering in Konkan platforms are not same.This makes you totally depend on Konkan information officials or the separate coach position they display in stations, if you are not sure about the coach position in a perticular train.This happened to me last...
more... month.I wanted to board Pune-EKM Express in 3 AC from Udupi to Ernakulam.From web I came to know that AC coaches are in the front,when I asked in information counter regarding B3 coach position,he told me to go to 22 coach position.I got bemused,I clarified again...but he was telling me to go to 22. Totally confused,I searched coach position numbering in platform...my goodness there was sea change in coach position numbering.I would like to ask my fellow travellers in Konkan,whether the numbering in Konkan is a bane or boon.My question to public is,whether railway has the right to follow its own coach position numbering which is opposite to Indian railway.
