GUWAHATI/SILCHAR, Nov 18 - After a wait of over a year, passenger train service in the newly converted Lumding-Silchar broad gauge section will start from November 21.
Union Minister of State (Railways) Manoj Sinha will flag off the 05691/05692 special passenger train from the Silchar Railway Station on November 21 at 1 pm in presence of Union Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and other delegates.
After completion of the Mega Block in the section and replacement of the meter gauge with broad gauge track earlier this year, the Indian Railways had started goods train...
more... services in the section earlier. However, passenger services in the newly converted section had not started till now.
Confirming this latest development, Kaushik Rai, president of Cachar district BJP told reporters on Wednesday that he had a prolonged conversation with the Minister of State for Railways regarding the wish of the people of Barak Valley to see the first passenger train start its journey from Silchar. Rai also informed that other leaders of the party including State general secretary Dr Rajdeep Roy and former Union Minister Kabindra Purakystha also had discussions with Sinha urging him to reconsider the place to flag off the train following which, the rescheduled timing and location was notified. Earlier, the train was to be flagged off from Guwahati. “We had placed the popular will before the minister and we are extremely happy at his response. It will be a momentous occasion for the people of Barak Valley who were fighting against hope for 18 years for this day,” Rai was quoted as saying.
