With accidents at level crossings on the rise, the focus is on ensuring an efficient level crossing system.Engineering students Dominic, N. Vinod Kumar, Rahul R.Sekhar, S. Sijil, and Rahul Chandran believe that limitations of the level crossing system can be solved with their project —stationmaster controlled railway level crossing system. It ensures that level crossings are closed for traffic when there is impending rail movement. This automatic signal-controlled system comprises a monitoring system under the control of the stationmaster, controlling system consisting of stepper motor, and a detection system installed on the tracks. The systems are suitably interfaced with a microcontroller, which is the heart of the system. When the stationmaster remotely activates the level cross gates through the system containing the microcontroller, the gates open automatically once the train moves past the gates. At present more than half of the level crossings are unmanned, which invite accidents. This system can make both unmanned and manned...

level crossings automatic and eliminate accidents, Rahul R.Sekhar said. The person operating the system can view the open/ close status of the level crossing at any given time. The project provides an automatic signal-controlled level crossing system that does not use any sensor and is compatible with wireless communication networks. The students say the system can be maintained at a low cost and multiple signals along the tracks can be controlled with a panel at the stationmaster's office with digitised telephone and display unit. “The project can be taken to the next level by introducing an anti-collision system that can prevent head-on or rear-end collision, thereby reducing the number of accidents,” says Nikhil.

A minor update, but may impact many members: Hereafter, FMs will be able to delete invalid Red Flags on Imaginary trains. Red Flags can be removed by FMs, only against specific complaints filed against the blog. This does not give all members the right to complain against EVERY single red flag they...

-@all members: As of recently, there has been a trend whereby minor name updates of Trains/Stations - whether such and such regional name should be there or not, whether the train should be called "Abc Express" or "Abc Superfast Express", etc. are threatening to take over the majority of Timeline entries. Also,...

The modification to the TL Update scheme - i.e. the introduction of the new RAC System - has led to some efficiency with TL Updates. More TLs are being discussed, and quickly moved up. However, we still have on Average, about 300 Waitlisted TLs in the backlog at any time, and our hard-working and diligent TLMs...
