Kuranda Scenic Railway, Australia
The Kuranda Scenic Railway is a fantastic, and ever so slightly terrifying, way to explore the landscapes of Queensland, Australia. A haven for nature lovers, the train passes through an area that is home to roughly 200 species of tropical plants and trees, such as orchids and exotic palms.

Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe train, South Africa
This South African railway takes you on a picturesque ride through the country's famous Garden Route, with spectacular views of the Indian Ocean. Although the line has been closed since 2009, the government is planning to reopen the once popular track.

Cumbers and Toltec Scenic Railroad, Colorado
Running through incredible scenery from New Mexico to Colorado, the Cumbers & Toltec Scenic Railroad is a route on the US circuit that can't be missed. Crossing suspended bridges and hugging mountainsides, the train runs along the same route taken by miners hoping to make their fortune in the California Gold Rush.

Tren de las nubes, Argentina
The Tren de las nubes is an obligatory pit stop for anyone who finds themselves in the north of Argentina. Literally translated, the route is called the train in the clouds, as it crosses the Cordillera de los Andes to the Chilean border with views that will take your breath away.

White Pass and Yukon Route, Alaska and Yukon (Canada)
Alaska invites you to step aboard the White Pass and Yukon Route, constructed to clear the way for gold mining in Klondike. With breathtaking views over unspoiled Alaskan landscapes, the tracks now attract their fair share of adventurous tourists.

Chennai Rameswaram Route, India
With one of the most formidable rail networks in the world, it's no surprise that India also holds one of its scariest train journeys. Located in the southeast of the country, the Chennai Rameswaram Route runs directly above the waters of the Indian Ocean, crossing bridges built into the seabed.

Georgetown Loop Railroad, Colorado
We return to Colorado for this next railway line, which runs one of the most historic routes in America. The track was built at the end of the 1800s through the Rocky Mountains, one of the most important mining sites at the time. Suspended more than 650 feet in the air at certain points, the train guarantees superb views of Colorado's scenery.

Death Railway, Thailand
As its name may suggest, Death Railway is one of the most terrifying train journeys in Thailand. Linking capital Bangkok to Rangoon, the track was constructed by the Japanese during the World War II. It didn't actually get its name from the precarious tracks it runs on, but rather from the 90,000 civilians and 16,000 Allied prisoners of war who were forced to construct it.

Minami Aso Route, Japan
Even the Land of the Rising Sun has a terrifying train journey to propose. The Minami Aso Railway crosses the area surrounding Mount Aso - Japan's most active volcano - in the southern region of Kumamoto.

Argo Gede Train, Indonesia
Our final stop is in Indonesia, where the Argo Gede Train runs across one of the most lush landscapes in the world. On the three-hour trip from Jakarta to Bandung, the train passes over a spectacular valley on the Cikurutug Bridge suspended 1,970 feet above the jungle floor.
