If you can afford to stay in suburbs of Mumbai like Andheri, Churchgate, Mumbai Central , you can enjoy city life too and be near train staitions from where you board the trains for your onward journey.

I wish to visit all the Vipassana meditation centres in Maharashtra, though not necessarily for taking a course at each one.
Having plotted all the centres in Maharashtra (and Andhra Pradesh / Madhya Pradesh just in case) I see 2 distinct 'lines', that is, lines connecting centres, not actual railway lines.

represents a useful intersection hence my idea of basing myself at said place. I am not new to India, this will be my 9th visit I think, and I would normally stay in Fort area of Mumbai but felt that Kalyan would make an interesting change if suitable accommodations can be found.
General itinerary would be going out and stopping off for half day, one day or two days in each location and availing of longer gaps for overnighting on train. Having reached my end point, I can take the most interesting return train. Certainly I would like to try the Nagpur Duronto as I have never been on such a train.
So, my enquiry is quite specific to Kalyan and modest accommodations therein.
