BHUBANESWAR: The Bhubaneswar railway station is set to get a makeover.
The passenger reservation system (PRS) counter was shifted to a temporary building near the railway station on Wednesday to make room for the construction of a new building at the entrance of the station.
The East Coast Railway (ECoR) sources said the construction work of the four-storey building will begin soon and the process of selecting tender for the work is going on.
department secretary NK Pradhan said his department will start construction by the first week of January. The state transport department has also signed an agreement with the Indian Railways for the same.
The PRS and the booking - shifted to a temporary building near the RMS office - would be dismantled to build the proposed structure. Till the new station building comes up, the PRS office will function from the temporary office, sources said.
Pradhan said the ground floor of the four-storey building will be used by the station master and his engineering and signalling staff. There will be a passage on the ground floor to connect the station with Master Canteen. Passengers and visitors can enter through the first floor to reach the platform 1. The first floor will also have ticket booking offices while the second and third floors will house food court and rest rooms. .
According to sources in the works department, the railways will add two more platforms on either sides of the station to tackle the flow of passengers and growing number of trains.
Earlier, there was a proposal for the construction of a multi-level vehicle parking complex. However, it will not be part of the new building. The parking complex, to be constructed by Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA), will now come up outside proposed building.

-@all members: As of recently, there has been a trend whereby minor name updates of Trains/Stations - whether such and such regional name should be there or not, whether the train should be called "Abc Express" or "Abc Superfast Express", etc. are threatening to take over the majority of Timeline entries. Also,...

The modification to the TL Update scheme - i.e. the introduction of the new RAC System - has led to some efficiency with TL Updates. More TLs are being discussed, and quickly moved up. However, we still have on Average, about 300 Waitlisted TLs in the backlog at any time, and our hard-working and diligent TLMs...
