KOLHAPUR: Eight months after announcing electrification of the Pune-Kolhapur railway track, the government has finally given in-principle nod to the project by sanctioning Rs 513.07 crore.
In his budget speech in February, Union railways minister Suresh Prabhu had announced electrification of the 326km-long route.
The ministry has allotted the execution of route electrification work to Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCCIL) and a public sector company. At present, the electrification project is in the process of receiving statutory approval from Railways Board. The railway ministry has advised the Mumbai zone to undertake

the preliminary exercise of preparing a detailed estimate of the allotted work.
Shivnath Biyani, president of Maharashtra Railways passengers Association in Kolhapur and a member of Mumbai Zonal Railways users consultancy committee, told TOI, "We welcome the railway ministry's decision. The electrification work will have a great impact on the passengers as well as goods transport in the region. It will also reduce the travel time of major trains, as the average time on every route will be cut down by three hours.
"Post the electrification, the Kolhapur-Delhi trains will get a major boost. The trains from Kolhapur take 32 hours to reach Delhi. After completion of the work, the passengers will be able to save almost three hours of their journey," Biyani said.

-@all members: As of recently, there has been a trend whereby minor name updates of Trains/Stations - whether such and such regional name should be there or not, whether the train should be called "Abc Express" or "Abc Superfast Express", etc. are threatening to take over the majority of Timeline entries. Also,...

The modification to the TL Update scheme - i.e. the introduction of the new RAC System - has led to some efficiency with TL Updates. More TLs are being discussed, and quickly moved up. However, we still have on Average, about 300 Waitlisted TLs in the backlog at any time, and our hard-working and diligent TLMs...
