Mumbai: Scores of railway offenders are being let off with measly fines of Rs 50, after the Centre scrapped the Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes on Tuesday night.
The Railway Protection Force was forced to suspend its drive against the offenders after realising the magistrate’s court did not have change to hand out in exchange of higher denomination notes.
The drive, launched on Wednesday, netted about 793 offenders and a total fine of Rs 84,130 was collected from them. Of these 793, 380 were caught while trespassing and were made to pay...

After knowing about the IR decision of not tendering the cash for cancellation of 10000+ tickets, these guys may not turn up at all for cancellation. It would be a matter of interest to IT officials as well as IR officials, to keep a track on the occupancy of such dubious high value tickets booked in these 2-3 days. IR has only to gain out of this. Last minute confirmation of Wait listed and upgradation to higher classes will be a pleasant experience for many paxs.!!
