NEW DELHI: Railways on Monday extended the use of defunct Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currency notes, which have been demonetised by the Modi government, to purchase tickets and for onboard catering till November 24.
The government had earlier allowed use of the old currency at government hospitals, railway ticketing, public transport, airline ticketing at airports, milk booths, crematoria/burial grounds and petrol pumps till November 11 which was extended to November 14 and now further extended to November 24.
The use of demonetised currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 denomination was

extended up to November 24 tonight, and all concerned have been instructed to comply with the latest instruction, according to a senior Railway Ministry official.
However, the precautionary measures, like refund of cancelled tickets would be done through ticket deposit receipts (TDR) and not in cash among others, would continue, he added.
The railways had announced stop giving refund for cancellation of tickets in cash and instead issuing ticket deposit receipts (TDR).
In case of refund amount touching Rs 10,000 or above, the Railways will only transfer the amount to the customer's bank account and the person concerned is required to furnish account details for receiving the amount while cancelling the ticket.

This step aimed to "help out" genuine persons facing shortage of the currency notes is a reaction of the media reports and is a double edged sword. Most likely more of the notes exchanges/deposits will be done indirectly by the black money hoarders using poor people to do it on their behalf, in exchange of a commission.

There has recently been a lot of frustration among RFs when their Station Pics, Loco Pics, Train Pics get rejected because the "number is not showing", "shed is not visible", the loco/train is at a distance, Train Board is too small, "better pic available", etc. . To address this issue, effective tomorrow, ALL...

-@all members: As of recently, there has been a trend whereby minor name updates of Trains/Stations - whether such and such regional name should be there or not, whether the train should be called "Abc Express" or "Abc Superfast Express", etc. are threatening to take over the majority of Timeline entries. Also,...
