CHENNAI: On Friday morning, Prem, 25, a commuter from Tambaram was injured as the suburban train he was on approached Guindy station.
The train halted at the station for 20 minutes but there was no provision to administer first aid, though Prem was bleeding profusely. A group of Railway Protection Force policemen was on hand but they apparently questioned Prem, instead of helping him, to penalise him for foot-board travel.
As no first-aid was forthcoming, Prem climbed a foot over-bridge and took an autorickshae to a hospital nearby.
travelling with the man were furious and demanded to know why the railways could not provide basic first aid to passengers in emergency.
"He was travelling on the foot-board in a crowded first-class compartment and would have probably hit a post. His hand was bleeding," a witness N Karthik said. "He could not even walk and wanted a stretcher to go across the FOB. However, the guard came, looked at him, called for an ambulance and left. There was absolute lack of sensitivity on part of railway staff despite the train stopping at the station for 20 minutes."
Officials in the Chennai division of Southern Railway said all stations that had station masters had first-aid boxes. All trains had them and guards are trained to administer first aid in an emergency. In this case, sources said not even a message was passed to yje conytol room, indicating that the railways had not taken cognisance of the incident.Station masters told TOI the staff should pro-actively administer first aid to those in need. "The station master should have immediately taken charge. He shouldn't wait for commuters to register a complaint," a senior station master on the Chennai-Tambaram section said on condition of anonymity.
Consumer activist T Sadagopan, a regular commuter on the Chennai-Pattabiram stretch, said booking counters should have prominent signage indicating where first aid is available.

How sad. But I know very kind RPF officials who help immediately if a person is injured.

-@all members: As of recently, there has been a trend whereby minor name updates of Trains/Stations - whether such and such regional name should be there or not, whether the train should be called "Abc Express" or "Abc Superfast Express", etc. are threatening to take over the majority of Timeline entries. Also,...

The modification to the TL Update scheme - i.e. the introduction of the new RAC System - has led to some efficiency with TL Updates. More TLs are being discussed, and quickly moved up. However, we still have on Average, about 300 Waitlisted TLs in the backlog at any time, and our hard-working and diligent TLMs...
