Chennai: If you light a cigarette on a moving train or throw a cover containing leftover food, thinking no one is noticing you, you better be careful, for these acts can be fined.
According to sources, the railways has taken a lot of initiatives to ensure that travelling remains a fine experience for passengers. As a part of these measures, sources point out that TTEs (travelling ticket examiners) have been empowered to levy fines on those who either smoke or throw waste in locomotives.
TTEs will be responsible to take action against persons

smoking. The action will be taken under the Tobacco Product Act, 2003, as authorised by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. There will be a penalty on passengers who don't have the habit of maintaining cleanliness, say the sources.
The sources point out that other responsibilities have also been given to ticket examiners. They must ensure that amenities and services on trains remain high, and also co-ordinate with security agencies like the Railway Protection Force and Government Railway Police to ensure the safety of travellers.
Things don't end with that. TTEs must also keep an eye on anti-social elements on the prowl in trains. If they find someone indulging in child trafficking, they can alert the security forces, pointed out the railway source.
As part of efforts to make train travel more comfortable, another measure has been taken. According to sources, the services of train superintendent is said to be extended to other trains also. This train superintendent will welcome passengers, provide his contact details to the travellers, and passengers can approach him in case of need. The superintendent will be in-charge of all personnel inside the train - except the guard and driver - and provision of services and passenger safety.
While expressing satisfaction over these measures, there must be stricter implementation of non-smoking rules, in particular, hinted T T Shanti, a resident of Anna Nagar, who recently made a trip to her hometown Kerala.
There must be a watch late nights as it is common for passengers to get into washrooms then for a smoke, she said. Passengers wishing to use washrooms in the night are put to inconvenience as they have to bear the pungent odour of the cigarette smoke which lurks inside for long time.
Agreeing with her is K Gopalakrishnan, a marketing executive and a regular traveller. In the absence of police personnel on trains, it is common for passengers to get into washrooms for a smoke. And, mostly, no attention is paid to such people. I hope that with the new empowerment, TTEs will be able to check this activity, he said. As they remain alert throughout the journey, they will be able to put a check on smoking, he pointed out.

There has recently been a lot of frustration among RFs when their Station Pics, Loco Pics, Train Pics get rejected because the "number is not showing", "shed is not visible", the loco/train is at a distance, Train Board is too small, "better pic available", etc. . To address this issue, effective tomorrow, ALL...

-@all members: As of recently, there has been a trend whereby minor name updates of Trains/Stations - whether such and such regional name should be there or not, whether the train should be called "Abc Express" or "Abc Superfast Express", etc. are threatening to take over the majority of Timeline entries. Also,...
