Finance Minister Rejects Prabhu’s Rs 1,19,183 Cr ‘Safety Fund’ For Railways
New Delhi: Train passengers may have to shell out more as Railways is mulling increasing fares in a bid to raise resources after the Finance Ministry rejected its proposal of a special safety fund.
According to the proposal, a safety cess will be levied to generate funds for strengthening track and upgrading signalling system and elimination of unmanned level crossings among other safety-related works to prevent mishaps.

Railway can charge one or two rupee on each ticket. For season tickets they can charge Rs.30-60. Atleast some portion they can collect.
Air India ko package and Railways ko thenga. It would be wise if Railways stop excessive pressure on 3A, the only profitable passenger section. Rather should look to increase its presence in rakes for more profit. (Humsafar was part of this idea to cash on 3A) Sabse jada safety comprised hai Sleeper class as in case of recent accident.

Yes, Finance ministry should give some bailout package ( 60-70% of total amount) and rest IR can compensate by increase in fare.

According to official data, Railway is facing a loss of approx 33K crore from passenger segment so image if Railways does the unexpected and directly increases the fare then also it can't accumulate 1 lakh crore for this safety fund. Arranging more than 1 lakh crore on it's own without any assistance from finance ministry is practically impossible.
