PUNE: Late running of suburban trains in the Daund and Lonavla sections has left thousands of daily passengers frustrated.
"It is a common problem here. The administration is not at all serious about resolving it. There has been no improvement even after repeated complaints to the authorities here," Ajay Jagtap, who often travels to Daund by a passenger train, said while ruing about the extra time he has to spend on travelling due to the late running of these trains.
Sonali Satav, who travels by local trains up to Dehu Road, said the
administration should avoid delays at least during the rush hours. "We have often noticed that the local trains are stopped at Chinchwad or Khadki stations to make way for the fast ones. Why can't the administration provide a separate track for suburban trains. Apathy and neglect of suburban traffic is affecting people," she said.
Last week, about 100 angry passengers travelling by Baramati-Pune passenger train took to the rail track and stopped the Coimbatore-Mumbai express after their train was halted to make way for the latter. The issue was resolved only after the local police intervened.
Swapneel Tagare, a college student and resident of Urali, said the administration always gives priority to long distance and goods trains. "Just like Mumbai, there is an urgent need to provide dedicated railway tracks for suburban trains too," he said.
The Pune railway authorities operate local trains up to Lonavla and passenger trains/shuttles up to Daund-Baramati. The proposal for laying of third line up to Lonavla has been sanctioned, however, officials in the rail administration said the line will not start anytime soon as the proposal is yet to go through many stages.
Meanwhile, railway administration has maintained that they were not ignoring suburban passenger traffic.
A senior official from the administration said, "We are aware of the late running of trains on some occasions and the administration is taking steps to check this."
He, however, claimed that the mail/express trains are running with 90% punctuality. "Even the suburban ones are 70%-80% on time," he said, adding that the administration does not deliberately operates the suburban trains late.

Express trains, Passenger trains, Freight trains and Suburban trains all on the same track is a perfect recipe for poor train services. Suburban train travellers complain about regular delay and also long distance paxs too complain when the premium trains crawl on the suburban sections where they share track with much slower suburban trains. No body is happy.
Although, the Suburban trains carry the lowest class of passengers (least paying) but demand very high priority as it is a daily travel and paxs can ill afford to lose even 15 minutes every day where as an AC first class traveller of Rajdhani Express does not mind a delay of 15 minutes, as it is just a one time affair for him/her.

Best option is to have dedicated tracks for suburban trains so that quality and punctuality of all kinds of could be maintained. In the Pune-Daund case at least 3rd track must be constructed as the quantum of passengers may not be enough to justify a dedicated suburban corridor.

-@all members: As of recently, there has been a trend whereby minor name updates of Trains/Stations - whether such and such regional name should be there or not, whether the train should be called "Abc Express" or "Abc Superfast Express", etc. are threatening to take over the majority of Timeline entries. Also,...
