Guwahati, Dec 17 (PTI) Two elephants were killed and another critically injured in Assam's Nagaon district today after they were hit by a train, affecting rail traffic on the route.
The incident happened when the elephants were crossing tracks in Potiyapam area of Kampur. The two tuskers died on the spot, district administration officials said.
Another elephant was battling for its life.
Train services
were affected following the incident with the Dibrugarh-Delhi Rajdhani Express, Dibrugarh-Bangalore Express, Dibrugarh-Howrah Kamrup Express and Delhi-Dibrugarh Brahmaputra Mail held up at several stations, a North East Frontier Railway spokesman said.
The spokesman said the accident area was not earmarked as an elephant corridor.
"The Railways maintains speed restrictions of 40 km/hour in areas earmarked as elephant corridors but this particular area between Jamunamukh and Kampur railway stations is not one," the NEFR spokesman said.
Ten elephants have been killed by trains in the state during the month with seven dying in Nagaon district alone.
Two were killed in neighbouring Karbi Anglong and one in Bongaigaon district.

Death of elephants on the few critical corridors has become a regular news, and shall continue to remain the same. It is time to make those critical stretches of rly tracks elevated and/or making large number of underpasses for the safe passage of the pachyderms in danger.

Fencing might not help much. Elephants can easily break fences, and they do it..

There has recently been a lot of frustration among RFs when their Station Pics, Loco Pics, Train Pics get rejected because the "number is not showing", "shed is not visible", the loco/train is at a distance, Train Board is too small, "better pic available", etc. . To address this issue, effective tomorrow, ALL...

-@all members: As of recently, there has been a trend whereby minor name updates of Trains/Stations - whether such and such regional name should be there or not, whether the train should be called "Abc Express" or "Abc Superfast Express", etc. are threatening to take over the majority of Timeline entries. Also,...
