What is the difference between Tatkal and Premium Tatkal tickets on Indian Railways?
Premium tatkal is an online only reservation facility that bought by Indian railway on October 1st 2014 to extract more money from public to increase their revenue.
It is almost like the pattern of airline fares – more the demand, higher the fare. Around eight to nine per cent of the seats in a train are allotted through tatkal and half of these are now being sold under premium tatkal dynamic pricing, which allows passengers to buy a ticket online

even a day prior to the date of their journey. You can only book premium tatkal tickets from Indian railways official website.
Seats allotted through premium tatkal, if unsold, are made available to wait-listed passengers of Tatkal Quota (TQWL). The minimum premium fare is the basic train fare plus the Tatkal charges, which vary from 10 per cent to 30 per cent with an upper limit depending on the class of travel. The maximum premium is up to 30 per cent of the base fare or ₹400 (whichever is higher). It is easy to read a list when compared to a lengthy paragraph, so I listed below some main difference between Premium Tatkal and Tatkal.
Unlike Tatkal tickets, there is no waitlisting in Premium-Tatkal tickets; this means an assured reserved berth. However, cancellations are also not allowed.
No concession is given to any group such as children’s, Senior citizens etc. But if you book normal tatkal tickets you will get all concessions.
Premium Tatkal ticket cost will remain same as normal tatkal if there is no demand (which is never going to happen).
The scheme is, however, applicable on select trains. All railway zones have been asked to identify five popular trains in their respective zone.
Advance Reservation Period (ARP) of Premium Tatkal ticket booking is same as Tatkal ticket booking.
You cannot book the Premium Tatkal tickets through third party websites like the makemytrip. Yatra .com etc. Also it not available at the railways reservation counters too. But in the case of normal tatkal tickets, you can book from railways reservation counters.
Also Agents will not be allowed to book tickets in this premium tatkal quota.
Identity card number of the prescribed proof of identity is required at the time of booking. At least one passenger should travel with his/her ID card in original which was used at the time of booking.
No refund is given to passengers in case of cancellation of confirm Premium Tatkal (PT) quota ticket.
All rules for tatkal quota booking over internet is applicable to Premium Tatkal quota also.
Opening days booking to be allowed on/after 10:00 hrs

These days, every other day, we are getting requests from members to allow email login to their FB-based IRI account. 10 years ago, we had given the option for users to login through FaceBook - in retrospect, this was a mistake. These days, apparently, users are quitting FaceBook in droves because...
