According to veteran railfan Anindya Da :
In old days, in London, or UK as whole ... the train numbering system followed this patter : any train coming towards London was christened UP & that going away from it was called DN. Now when the British opened Great Indian Peninsular Railways, they carried over that numbering system from UK & was implemented in Bombay & Madras Divisions ... as a result WCR, CR & WR still now follows this practice. The trains leaving Mumbai are called DN & the end digit of the train number is EVEN & vice versa. But the alreadt prevailing East Indian Railway ( the forerunner of today's ER, SER, ECR ) followed the reverse system ... that is any train going away from Calcutta was called UP & it's number wud end in an ODD

digit & vice versa. This system followed the logic of MSL ( mean Sea level ) afaik ... as Calcutta is at sea level so every train departing it was designated UP & the train number ended in ODD & vice versa.
But after saying all these it shud be remembered that IR doesn't follows this rule strictly & there are numerous exceptions ... but I can say this much confirmedly that all ER trains follows the same convention with no exception ... departing trains UP & arriving trains DN .. UP trains with ODD digit & DN trains with EVEN digit.

Lemme show u some truth and factor: SLN-LKO-NDLS-UP line
1. 12391 Shramjeevi is UP: running away from Home Div (Rajgir to NDLS)
2. 19604 SLN-AII Exp is UP: Running towards Home Div (SLN-AII)
#
Both have two things:
1. One is running towards & other away from home Div, still both UP
2. One is Odd, while other is even in its numbering, still both are UP
#
Common Factor: Both run on UP Line & hence are

Kindly check theory with reality & find whats true!!
This UP & DN issue has been mugged many times!!
Only one thing was close enough & that was, if number even, train is Down, while if its Odd, train is up.
But to hamper this logic, SLN-AII & PNBE-INDB Express prevail.
So only one hard n fast logic, train running on UP Track or UP direction or UP, indifferent to serial number, Home Return or other related logic!!

Few trains having even no while going away from primary maintenance station.
HWH-MAS coromandel is 2841 and opposite is 2842 MAS-HWH
BZA-MAS pinakini is 2711 and opposite is 2712.
-------------------------------
But see SC-BZA-GDR simhapuri exp is 2710, but GDR-SC is 2709. Surprisingly its primary maintenance is SC but not GNT.
What do you say......??????
