The last line is not really correct; LPs are trained to stop the train within the PF limits. The guard has no say in this ! If you have noticed home/starter signals, some of them say "LPs should pull upto the Signal if it is ON". These signals are preceded by a signal which contain a white board with red lettering "C" which means calling on signal. The LP when he approaches the home signal, knows the exact length of the PF he is being diverted to, and pulls up at the signal of Starter. In some cases, you would have noticed on PFs saying EMUs "Stop Here" 15 car emus "stop here" and so on. In the case of Express Trains same position obtains. In DLI for instance which has ONE physical PF, but two different PF numbers (note the difference) the same notice board appears.

Here is a video taken by me (Arkchat) of an EMU jumping a platform and then stopping... But due to Passenger protest, the LP had to bring back the train within the platform limits.
