The guard has no say in this ! If you have noticed home/starter signals, some of them say "LPs should pull upto the Signal if it is ON". These signals are preceded by a signal which contain a white board with red lettering "C" which means calling on signal. The LP when he approaches the home signal, knows the exact length of the PF he is being diverted to, and pulls up at the signal of Starter. In some cases, you would have noticed on PFs saying EMUs "Stop Here" 15 car emus "stop here" and so on. In the case of Express Trains same position obtains. In DLI for instance which has ONE physical PF, but two different PF numbers (note the difference) the same notice board appears.
