Just to satisfy my curiosity......Why is Chennai Central short coded as MAS, Kanpur as CNB, Vijaywada as BZA and many more.......the words in these short codes does not exist in the station name for example the words CNB does not exist in the name Kanpur......so whats the real reason behind such short codes......

One place that change the name and also the code is Bombay Victoria Terminus (BBVT was the code if am not wrong) which was changed to Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CSTM).

sir,but his does not always work...kolkata terminal present code koaa,was previously known as chitpur with code as cp...the code can still be found on trainenquiry.com...but with change in station name,the code was also changed...

Sir, i just asked out of curiosity.
80% of people dont konw various terminologies of railways, more than SL, PNR, 3A etc.
Definitiely most of them dont know WAP, WDP or codes of stations, or availability of terminal facilities/coach maintainances etc.
I bet a majority of people donot write station codes or train numbers on reservaton requisition form, while booking PRS ticket.
Even I see people Who think train can reach ongole via rajahmundry from Warangal(I met one.)
Majority dont have idea of even the maps.
Generally politicians might be bothered about giving...

I think when people get a train, or when they just announced change of name in some ones honour, I dont think they notice about codes, that too when they have got one gift.
Also that was era when e-ticketing was not opened and people dont need to know station codes.
Bal thackery, a politician who is bothered about different sectors of society, say agriculture, price-rise, unemployment, and marathi language etc. why should he interfere in some TECHNICAL MATTER OF RAILWAYS (changing code to CSTM).This was my doubt.
What was disgusting about this?
