Kharagpur Workshop has evolved and grown over the years to become the largest maintenance workshop of the Indian Railways. It carries out periodic overhaul of all varieties of B.G. Rolling Stock viz., Diesel Locomotives, Electric Locomotives, Coaches, all types of Wagons, Electric Multiple Units (EMUs) and Steam and Diesel Cranes. The workshop belonged to the erstwhile SER whose span of control extended upto Vizag. Interestingly, of the 880 kms of railway track from Howrah to Vizag, 252 kms are located in AP. Although, this was not the result of any demand/agitation, there was an unwritten 25% reservation in jobs at the workshop for people of AP/Telugu origin. I always used to surprise how TELUGU's are more at KGP. In Bharempur there are many telugu people..I can say almost 50% i think. But there is a logic for it as it is very close to AP border. But KGP story i dont know till now. I think most of them from north coastal AP. Particularly more from Srikakulam/CHE, VZM. I think Digha train needs at stop at CHE too. KGP used to hold legendary WDM-1's in the sheds. i have spotted such breeds in the year 2000 when i traveled by Falaknuma Express to Howrah. heard lot of pple working there as TTE's, LP's, ALP's, etc. perhaps, KGP is the only/first shed which homed the Australian breed WDM-1's in the late 1900's when the Howrah - Madras Mail was dieselized.
