Here is my take on the JUNCTION controversy, for whatever it is worth. This term was coined by the British, who were the pioneers of the present day IR. The meaning of the term junction is something we all know and bears no repetition. However, IR since its inception, has apparently not given much importance to the word junction and permitted a lot of interchangeability in its use. Looking at the TAAG (1986), I rarely find this term used, even where the station in question is undisputably a junction. The current TAAG does not refer to ANY STATION as a junction in the respective tables that feature the name of that station.
However, the station index and the station code index do occasionally refer to a few stations as ...... Jn. However, there are apparently a number of errors there....

Quite a few stations which are junctions are not termed as such like say ERODE and GAYA. So my feeling is that this suffix after the name of a station has in fact lost its meaning by misuse/overuse and the arguement as to why X is a junction but not referred to as one whereas Y is called a junction when it does not deserve to be so called, is an exercise in shadow boxing and futility.
