146 Years of Glorious Service:: Undisputed Kalka Mail keeps going and going and going...
.
.
More than 3 hours and 30 minutes late running 12312 Kalka (KLK)- Howrah (HWH) Down KALKA Superfast Mail headed by its regular link 30247 Duronto liveried GZB shed WAP-7 thunders through the Reverse line at Baruipara station on HB Chord enroute. The late running was due to the infamous North Indian fog mayhem. At the background, you can also find a stationary 12337 Howrah (HWH)- Bolpur (BHP) SHANTINIKETAN Superfast Express, which was waiting to get signal to change tracks from the Up Main to the Reverse after the Kalka Mail had passed through the Reverse..
Come 2012, and

12311/ 12312 Kalka Mail completed 146 years of glorious service. It began operation in 1866 between Calcutta and Delhi with numbering 1 Up/ 2 Down EAST INDIAN RAILWAY MAIL. It was further extended from Delhi to Kalka in 1891. The train was the principal mechanism for British civil servants to move from the capital, Calcutta, to the summer capital in Shimla. As the capital used to be shifted twice every year, the entire government machinery used to travel on Kalka Mail. Both the stations had internal carriageway for the cars of Viceroy and other high ranking officers to reach next to their Rail Coach, The carriageway at Howrah is still used and runs between Platforms 8 and 9, but the carriageway at Kalka has been converted into platform.
There is two unique kind of info related to this train:
1) This train runs as a normal Express (Super Crawler) between Old Delhi and Chandigarh (with 12 halts in 267 kms), and as a Superfast between Howrah and Old Delhi (with 27 halts in 1446 kms). Ticket prices are calculated like-wise.
2) This is the only train in India to have the pantry car attached for half of the journey. Neither the terminating nor the originating station sees this train with a Pantry Car. The Pantry Car gets attached at Chandigarh (with 10 other coaches) and gets detached at Mughal Sarai, where a sectional A.C. 3 Tier coach (seen just after the loco) replacing the Pantry.

But Hybrid LHB coaches can easily be given.. Along with many other popular trains, Kalka Mail and Poorva desperately needs those coaches..

If the train is rerouted via Chandigarh, still it would touch UMB station enroute.. I just want the train to follow Ambala Cantt.- Chandigarh- Una Himachal- Nangal Dam route instead of Ambala Cantt.- Sirhind Junction- Anandpur Sahib- Nangal Dam route..
The train has got only 5 SL, 1 3-AC and 1 2-AC coach, yet look at the vacancy even in the peak season:

I have tarvlled in this train in late 2008 from DLI-HWH. I presoneely saw PC along withi 1PC 1 2AC 2 3AC 3 SL and 1 II coaches attached at DLI. I may be missing one or two numbres though. I still remeber I have rsuh my dinner to finsh off whcih was served after ALD and the waiter asked trays to be collected before MGS and then I found that pantry will be removed at MGS. I got down and saw it again at 8.30PM at MGS
At MGS the half of train with II coaches and PC de-coupled and the PC was detached. There after the remaing II coaches and anothe 3AC coach was attached. 3AC coach was just behind the engine.
I wish I could have camera to acpture

I think there must be a Confusion from your end.
This train has never changed such Huge Configuration wise since the long Few Years unless that day there was some exception due to some incidents.
I clearly remember when i travelled by this train to Kalka during September -October 2005, it almost had the same composition and the CDG part was detached at CDG for which it halted there for 55 mins at 3am in the morning.
That time Kalka mail used to halt at DELHI for 2 Hours from 845 pm to 1040pm.

Also very long back, it used to have DELHI portion Cut-Off probably the same configuration you are saying but that was Late 1990's and early 2000.

Things have changed since 2008... Earlier this train used to get a RMS red coloured coach (saw the same when I travelled on this train 6 yrs ago).. Now the RMS is replaced by a General coach, and the RMS is given to Lal Quilla Express..

kalka platform can only handle 10-12 boggies this information is wrong, kalka shatabdis run with 17-18 coaches and the whole train fits into the platform..
