Kerala is a peculiar state in many ways.Aside from being Leftist and the host of a great number of RALLIES,HARTHALS et al,the state presents an interesting case study when it comes to the topic of URBAN DEMOGRAPHY.Unlike most other states which have a select few densely populated nerve centres with the rest of the vast countryside sprinkled sparsely with idyllic hamlets,Kerala may be considered a gigantic Megalopolis because hardly any area can be termed rural with no people for miles around.
This posts an interesting predicament as far as the railways are concerned.Kerala people(or everyone,I think)by nature expect things to be delivered to their door step.Throw in their enthusiasm in staging a protest and it won't be long before a Japanese Bullet

Train crawls through Kerala at the speed of a BUS.People are reluctant to travel to stations because of REGIONALISM.The undesirable offshoot of PATRIOTISM.
There's your answer !

The line from Madras actually runs to Mangalore(MAQ) ! See the km markings. But since Mangalore or the northern part of Kerala was not important to the idiots running the Southern Railway, they constructed a bypass line(bypassing Shoranur). I still consider MAS-MAQ line as the mainline. Most trains going towards ERS/TVC from MAS/PGT skip SRR by using that line.

Yes RPM is the first station in South. The second line was built from RPM to AJJ next to the Bombay- Thane line.

Yes, unforunately RPM is in a dilapilated state now. The Railway Board is planning to renovate RPM in the process of making it a third terminal for MAS.

These days, every other day, we are getting requests from members to allow email login to their FB-based IRI account. 10 years ago, we had given the option for users to login through FaceBook - in retrospect, this was a mistake. These days, apparently, users are quitting FaceBook in droves because...
