yes i agree,this is totally a way to make money,by ir. i feel they should put a cap on such exorbitant wl which has no chance of getting confirmed even if they add a couple of xtra coach

This is common scenario is most of the Up/Bihar bound trains from Mumbai/Surat.
IR issuing WL tickets almost double the capacity ie.700 of the train.

Thats the trend too, as multiple booking for train happens & same way multiple cancellation leads to clearance of tickets even!!
Further, not all gets cancelled, as the SL Coaches are full to 200% capacity & the one without berth are the traveler with WL Ticket, which under miserable circumstances are the only way out to travel for many!!
If we take 10 SL Coaches & 100 WL Traveler per coach, figure easily comes to 100 WL.
Further, this WL, which gets display is combo of all Quota (GEN/RL/PQ), which accumulates all WL across various Quota covered with sharing station Quota
