The IMPERIAL INDIAN MAIL (also called the OVERLAND MAIL) was introduced way before India gained her Independence, and was the first train to connect the port city of Mumbai with the then Capital of India, namely Calcutta. The train belonged to The Great Indian Peninsular Railway, and was operated by the Britishers. The train was back then the world's most luxury train, and had Dining Cars, and really out of the world aesthetics for the Upper Class people, and also a few wooden third class coaches for the fellow Indians. I have some request and suggestion. (1) Request: 'heard from grandfather that in the pre-independence era, Darjeeling Mail used to run from Sealdah to present day Siliguri Town (then called Siliguri) station via Sarah bridge/Ishwardi station (?) in then East Bengal [vaguely recall that some severe accident occurred too somewhere in East Bengal]. The train used to reach Siliguri (Town) early morning around 6 am. Passengers used to enjoy superb breakfast at Kelnar (?) restaurant on the platform and board the Toy Train to Darjeeling - the station was the terminating station for the BG train and originating station for the NG Toy Train. I have visited the present day Town station (as it is called popularly) which is in very bad shape and condition.
