HYDERABAD: Concerned over increasing incidents of vehicles crashing into Metro Rail pillars and the loss of lives, the Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited along with the GHMC and the city police will soon launch an awareness and education campaign on safe driving practices. On May 10, AP minister P Narayana's son and another person were killed when a car he was reportedly driving at over 200 kmph slammed into a Metro Rail pillar in Jubilee Hills. "The focus of our campaign will be on creating awareness on safe driving and not on blaming anyone. We have been in discussions with the city police and GHMC officials on safety measures on the roads along the Metro Rail viaducts," HMRL managing director NVS Reddy said.

concessionaire, L&T, has been instructed to install appropriate signage on the pillars and along the Metro Rail route to make road users aware of safety while driving on the road," Reddy said.
Metro Rail pillars have been designed to withstand the impact of such crashes and this was evident in recent crashes when no dent could be seen on the pillars although vehicles involved weighed over a tonne. A 3.3-foot tall crash barrier that juts out a few inches can be seen on most pillars and they take any impact of a crash. "Nowadays, many powerful vehicles capable of high speeds are on the city roads. Even the ORR is not designed to take vehicles driving at 200 kmph. The roads in the city are designed for a maximum speed of 65 kmph," Reddy said. Once all pillars are constructed and the viaduct above carrying the rails is done, the median connecting the pillars on the road will be constructed. As per National Highway Authority's standards, such medians should be restricted to a height of a foot. "We will also beautify the median," Reddy said.

May 21 2017 (10:06)   SC lifts stay on cutting trees for Metro, but wants citizens’ pleas to be heard

MUMBAI: The Supreme Court has lifted a stay on felling of trees at various places along the 33.5km Colaba-Bandra-Seepz Metro III corridor. The Bombay high court had on May 5 vacated its order, which restrained Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) Ltd from cutting trees for the project. But it had allowed the stay to continue for 10 days to enable the petitioners to approach the SC. An MMRCL spokesperson said, "The SC heard a special leave petition filed by Nina Verma, challenging the Bombay HC order. The SC confirmed the HC order and refused relief on the stay vacated by the HC." Citizen activist Zoru Banthena said, "The SC directed citizens to go before the Bombay HC-appointed committee to oversee replantation and transplantation of trees for construction of the Metro III project. The stay on the cutting of trees continues." MMRCL said, "We will begin work at the sites where trees...

were affected after getting a copy of the SC order." In its May 5 order, the HC had said, "We appoint the member secretary of the Maharashtra legal services authority and deputy registrar to oversee compliance in regard to replantation, transplantation of trees..." The order said the compliance must be reported by officers from time-to-time and preferably every month to a committee of two HC judges, nominated by the chief justice. The HC had first given a stay on February 9 after residents filed a petition opposing cutting of over 5,000 trees. MMRCL claimed that only 2,801 were affected, of which 1,074 were to be cut. Sources said MMRCL was suffering a notional financial loss of Rs 4 crore each day as work had come came to a standstill at 25 stations, where tree were to be touched for the project. While vacating the stay, High court had directed MMRCL to file an undertaking including "to ensure trees equivalent to the number of trees affected (both cut and trees removed for transplant) will be planted in the same area on completion of the station construction work." Also, "for a period of three years thereafter, the transplanted trees will be looked after, safeguarded and maintained." The court had also noted that it is prima facie satisfied that MMRCL took essential steps to approach competent authorities under the CRZ notification and to obtain appropriate clearances subject to various conditions.

how come its worst judgement ? Metro trains will cut down many CARS in a very crowded (Worlds most dense) city like Mumbai. Its helps to reduction in pollution from Private cars and vehicles. I dont think all trees will be cut, some of them only will be cut. Cannot do much as mumbai over crowded and needs Metro capacity like delhi.

May 21 2017 (09:59)   Aarey to hand over 1.8 acres for shifting high tension lines

rdb*^   129373 news posts
Entry# 2286482   News Entry# 303097         Tags   Past Edits
MUMBAI: Aarey will hand over 77,500 sq feet (1.8 acres) for shifting high tension lines of Reliance Energy, which will be interfering with track electricification lines for Metro III. A government resolution for handing over the land to Reliance Energy was issued by the state agriculture, animal husbandry and dairy development departments on Friday. The land will be transferred to the state revenue and forest departments, which will then be handed over to Reliance Energy. At present, these lines are on the 29.2 hectares (72 acres) handed over to Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL) to build the car-shed for Metro III. The land was handed over to MMRCL in August 2014. Last January, MMRCL, following a public outcry, had proposed a double-deck car-shed reducing land requirement to 20.82 hectares and impacting only 446 trees. An MMRCL spokesperson said the lines are coming within the area where depot tracks will be laid....
"Track electrification lines conflict with high tension lines and hence need to be shifted," said the spokesperson. In March, MMRCL wrote to the government asking for the high tension lines to be shifted. In fact, the new location, which is across the Marol Maroshi road near a Reliance sub-station was identified by MMRCL. According to a GR issued by the Dairy Development Department, MMRCL has said the 1.8 acres have been excluded from the eco-sensitive zone (ESZ) around Sanjay Gandhi National Park. In the final ESZ notification issued last December, the Union ministry for environment and forests and climate change had excluded 165 hectares (407 acres) from the ESZ around the national park. D Stalin, director the Vanashakti NGO that has filed a plea before the National Green Tribunal to declare the whole of Aarey as an ESZ said, "Aarey is a no-development zone and there is a public hearing which is under way, yet the government in the most undemocratic manner is giving out parcels of land."

May 17 2017 (17:07)   I-T raids in benami land deal case linked to Lalu Prasad

Last week, the BJP accused Mr. Prasad, his daughter Misa Bharti, an MP, and sons Tejashwi Yadav and Tej Pratap Yadav, both Bihar Ministers, of being involved in corrupt land deals worth over Rs 1,000 crore.
The Income Tax Department on Tuesday conducted raids and surveys on at least 22 locations in Delhi and adjoining areas on charges of alleged benami deals worth ₹1,000 crore linked to Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad and others.
Officials said the department began raiding the premises of some prominent businessmen and real estate agents in

Delhi, Gurugram, Rewari and few others since early morning.
Searches were also being conducted on the premises of the son of RJD MP P C Gupta and few other businessmen.

BJP welcomes I-T raid on Lalu’s property   “People and businessmen connected to the land deal involving Lalu Prasad and his family are being searched. There are allegations of benami deals worth about Rs 1,000 crore and subsequent tax evasion,” a senior official said.
A team of about 100 department officials and police personnel were conducting the raids, the officials said.
Last week, the BJP accused Mr. Prasad, his daughter Misa Bharti, an MP, and sons Tejashwi Yadav and Tej Pratap Yadav, both Bihar Ministers, of being involved in corrupt land deals worth over Rs 1,000 crore, and asked the Central government to probe one such transaction in Delhi.
Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad had alleged that these transactions were a case of “quid pro quo” as they date back to the period when Mr. Lalu Prasad was the Railway Minister, and dared Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to take action against the chief of the RJD, which is a constituent of Bihar’s ruling coalition led by Mr. Kumar.
Mr. Lalu Prasad’s official residence was the address of the owners of the firms allegedly floated by his family members, Mr. Ravi Shankar Prasad had said.
Several suspect land deals took place in Bihar, he said, wondering if Mr. Kumar would invoke a special law enacted by his government in which assets acquired through illicit money are confiscated in this instance.
“The politics of Lalu Prasad has become politics of loot. Land worth crores of rupees was grabbed for a pittance,” Mr. Ravi Shankar Prasad said. One such land deal involving Mr. Lalu Prasad and his family members is in Bijwasan in Delhi, he alleged.
All the companies owned by Mr. Lalu Prasad’s family members for the purpose of these land transactions had no employees, no business activities and no turnover, he claimed.
Bihar’s biggest shopping mall, spread over 7.5 lakh square feet, is coming up in Patna as a part of such dubious transactions, he alleged at a news conference held in New Delhi.

Need to balance environment and development, says Bench
The Bombay High Court on Friday granted a stay on cutting of trees for the third phase of the Metro. The court said it cannot be overlooked that a project as important as the Metro Line III project cannot be undertaken without some damage to the environment.
A Division Bench of Chief Justice Manjula Chellur and Justice G.S. Kulkarni was hearing two petitions filed by residents of the city, challenging the project on two grounds: the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL) undertaking illegal felling
...
of trees and appropriate clearances not being obtained by MMRCL from authorities under the Coastal Zone Regulations.
After vacating its stay on felling of trees by the MMRCL, the Bench appointed the Maharashtra Legal Services secretary and the High Court’s deputy registrar to oversee that the undertaking given by Mumbai Metro is complied. “The secretary of Maharashtra Legal Services and the deputy registrar of the court are appointed to see if the MMRCL complies with its undertaking. A compliance report shall be filed every month before a committee of the two sitting judges of the High Court that will be appointed by us,” the court said.
The Bench, however, stayed its order lifting the ban on felling of tress by the Mumbai Metro for 10 days so that the petitioners may approach the Supreme Court in appeal. The Bench said, “An optimistic and pragmatic approach is necessary to mitigate this temporary phase which would ultimately result in larger public benefit. Thus, prima facie, the apprehensions of the petitioners on this count are not well-founded.”
The 20-page order reads, “The approach which is required to be adopted would be to bring about a balance on both the environment on one hand and development of the Metro Rail on the other hand. It cannot be overlooked that once functional, Metro III would also help for a better environment. It would also improve the socio-economic condition of the citizens.”
