The semi-high speed train that proposes to reduce the travelling time between Delhi and Agra to 105 minutes will be named as Gatimaan Express.
To be flagged off from New Delhi station next month, the train’s name has been chosen because of its capability of running at 160 km per hour speed, the maximum till date in Indian Railways, a senior Railway Ministry official said.
Equipped with comfortable seating arrangement, there will be eight-inch LCD TV screens installed behind each seat, the official said, adding that there will also be automatic fire alarm
with emergency braking system and passenger information system.
However, in the initial days, the passengers of Gatimaan Express will have the opportunity of watching pre-recorded programmes only as the live feed will be provided later on.
The first semi-high speed service of the railways is considered to be a boon for tourists visiting the city of Taj Mahal.
“We have sought safety certificate from the Commissioner Railway Safety to run the semi-high speed train next month as all necessary preparations are being completed now,” Railway Board Chairman Arunendra Kumar told PTI.
Asked when the train is scheduled to be flagged off, he said: “The date will be decided after getting the safety certificate but certainly before November 30.”
Railways has already conducted two trials of the train in the past and all other arrangements like fencing off certain areas along the route and upgrading of signalling system are being carried out.
Equipped with a 5,400 HP electric locomotive, the train will run at a maximum speed of 160 km per hour and is expected to cover the 200 km distance in about 105 minutes.
According to a senior Railway Ministry official, there are 14 new LHB AC coaches manufactured at rail coach factory at Kapurthala and are expected to be rolled out by month-end.
While 12 coaches will be used for daily running, two will be kept as spare ones, the official added.
The train will have executive class and chair car category of seats and also catering facility.
Railway authorities are also planning to launch similar trains in eight more routes, including Delhi to Kanpur and Delhi to Chandigarh.

Madhya Pradesh’s major industrial areas not on rail map
Manoj Ahuja, Hindustan Times Indore, October 02, 2014
First Published: 15:43 IST(2/10/2014)
Even after 67 years of Independence, some major industrial areas of Madhya Pradesh still don’t figure on India’s railway map. Industrial areas like Pithampur and Sidhi are yet to see a railway line despite projects being sanctioned many years ago.
rail connectivity has increased the time and cost of transportation for the exporters, say experts. "Absence of rail connectivity remains a major hurdle in industrial growth. Indore-Dahod and Indore-Dhar-Chhota Udepur rail projects are running way behind schedule," Pithampur industry association president Gautam Kothari said.
Poor connectivity to ports from Pithampur has always remained a constraint for exporters. Transportation time and cost had always been a negative part for SEZ Pithampur, say experts. At present, the goods meant for exports are sent to Mumbai ports mostly by road. The transportation of goods by rail is done via Ratlam thereby increasing the time and costs.
“Looking at the present development and future prospects, Pithampur needs attention of both central and state governments for rail network and investment zone development,” Kothari said.
The 210-km Indore-Dahod and 157-km Dhar-Chhota Udepurr rail line was to be built at a cost of Rs. 1,286 crore. The Indore-Dahod rail track was to provide an alternative route from Delhi to Mumbai via Dahod, Dhar, Dewas, Maksi, Shivpuri, Gwalior and Mathura, while Chhota Udepur-Dhar rail line on the Mumbai-Delhi trunk route was to link Indore, Pithampur, Dhar and Alirajpur. Experts say there is also an urgent need to begin Indore-Manmad and Dhar-Maksi-Dahod line.
When contacted, a Western Railway official, who did not wish to be named, said that projects have been moving at a slow pace due to funding and land acquisition related problems.
The slow pace of rail projects will also have an impact on the future projects. The materialization of a multimodal logistic hub at Pithampur as part of Pithampur-Dhar-Mhow investment node under DMIC (Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor) project will depend to a large extent on the Indian Railways, says a study. A report prepared by the DMIC Development Corporation appointed consultant states that several proposed and ongoing rail projects have to be completed for smooth connectivity.

Margao: The much hyped Mumbai-Goa double-decker train introduced ahead of the Ganesh Chaturthi festival, failed to evoke the desired response from the travelling public. Konkan Railway sources said that during the period from August 22 to September 1, only 1,640 seats of the train were booked out of the total available 8,640. The utilization capacity of the train thus works out to a meager 18.98%.
The situation in the other festive special air-conditioned Mumbai-Goa trains was
no better. In the Shatabdi Express, only 1,124 seats of the total available 4,635 tickets were booked
in the same period, while for the air conditioned reserved special train only 339 of the total available 1,330 seats were booked, for both up and down journeys.
Percentage utilization of capacity for these two trains works out to just 24.25% and 25.48% respectively.
"Konkan Railway makes an appeal to the public to avail the facility of these trains, otherwise Konkan Railway will be compelled to withdraw these services," says a press note issued by Konkan Railway.
Konkan Railway sources were at pains to explain the reason for such a poor response and were quick to deny that inadequate publicity could have led to under-utilization of the trains' capacity. "The media coverage of the double-decker train in Mumbai as well as in Goa was quite good. The train got very good publicity when it was introduced," a Konkan Railway source said.
Vaishali Patange, chief public relations officer, Konkan Railway, Mumbai, when asked to comment on the low patronage for the double-decker and other air conditioned special trains said: "These premium trains are usually patronized by a particular section of passengers who can afford such (high) fares. The rest prefer to travel in other trains (tickets of which are priced much lower) along the route."
Sources in the know, however, pointed out that as the bookings of some of the premium trains are required to be made only through online mode, this puts off those passengers who may not be tech-savvy. Sources in the Konkan Railway discounted the possibility that low fares of some Mumbai-Goa flights may have led to passengers preferring the aerial route to railways. "Absolutely not. Railways remain the cheapest mode of travel, and however low the air tickets may have been priced, they cannot be as low as the railway tickets," a source said.
