Nov 24 2016 (09:51)   Kanpur tragedy: Lower Parel workshop under scanner over maintenance of rake

Anurag WAPAHOLIC~   846 news posts
Entry# 2069610   News Entry# 286623         Tags   Past Edits
The train rake that derailed at Kanpur on Sunday , killing 148 passengers, had undergone intensive maintenance at Western Railway's Lower Parel workshop some 45 days before the accident.
Several officials involved in maintenance of the rake at the workshop fear that the adverse findings could lead to severe punishment.
A senior official said, “The rake belonged to Western Railway even though it plied between Indore and Patna. While 14 coaches got derailed, it is not clearly established whether the accident was a result of track failure. There is a possibility that a
defect in a coach, axle or wheel set may have led to its derailment, or perhaps a combination of multiple factors.“
Officials associated with the Lower Parel workshop such as the chief rolling stock engineer, coaching, and others will depose before the commission of railway safety , which will pose questions about the maintenance practice. The workshop undertakes maintenance of around 1,500 ICF and LHB coaches every year. Safety of train operations is dependent on proper maintenance of tracks, rolling stock and railway assets. These are required to be maintained and replaced at regular intervals for smooth and safe running of trains. When a rolling stock is sent to the workshop, a pre-inspection is carried out by the inspection team. Based on this pre-inspection, all major and minor sub-assemblies of rolling stock are repaired or replaced. The inspection also includes an ultrasonic test to detect cracks and a wheel's profile.
A senior official said, “Even though the minister of state has blamed a rail fracture, other evidence will have to considered, including the statement given by passengers who travelled in the ill-fated rake.“
Sources said some passengers, especially those from the S-1 coach, had complained of an unusual sound emanating as soon as the train moved out of Indore. Some also complained at Jhansi but many thought it fit to tackle the problem at Kanpur.
The official said, “The coach should have been detached soon after the complaints came in. Perhaps a defect in the coach, wheel or axle could have led to the derailment.“
At the intermediate stations, the problem could not be tracked as the rake could not be inspected thoroughly in the absence of a pit line on a running track.
Senior divisional mechanical engineer (carriage and wagon) Navaid Talib, divisional engineer M K Mishra, senior section engineer Ambika Ojha, section engineer Iswar Das and senior section engineer Sushil Kumar Gupta were suspended for dereliction of duty while the DRM of Jhansi division S K Aggarwal was transferred.

Catering to the growing demand of mobile users, Railways has taken steps for providing more mobile charging points in sleeper and unreserved general class coaches to help passengers.
"Earlier, there were only eight mobile charging points in a coach. However, in keeping pace with the changing times, we have decided to increase the number of sockets to 18 as the use of mobile phone and laptop have gone up considerably," said a senior Railway Ministry official.
So far, 7977 Sleeper coaches and 4634 general coaches have been provided with 18 mobile charging
points per coach. All AC coaches have already been equipped with sufficient mobile charging points
Enhancing passenger amenities, railways have equipped many major stations with WiFi facility. The facility is already operational at many stations including Bhubaneswar, New Delhi, Mumbai, Howrah, Bangalore, Chennai among others.

Nov 07 2016 (12:12)   NITI Aayog approves Pune-Kolhapur Rail line Electrification

Rahul Kumar   103 news posts
Entry# 2051401   News Entry# 285037         Tags   Past Edits
Pune: In what is good news for Maharashtra passengers, the NITI (National Institute for Transforming India) Aayog has given its appraisal note for the electrification of the Pune-Miraj-Kolhapur line.
The NITI Aayog’s approval is for the single line, currently in place as well as for the second line that is proposed to be built between the two cities. At current prices, the cost of electrification of the two lines— totalling 692 kilometres of tracks – would be Rs 513 crore, officials said.
The route, currently a single line, has got congested due to
the increase in passenger footfall as well as goods traffic between the two cities and a second line is now an urgent requirement. A sum of Rs 1.27 crore had been allotted for the preliminary engineering and traffic survey for the second line. While Rs 27 lakhs has already been spent on the survey, this year’s railway budget allotted the remaining Rs 1 crore as well in order to complete the survey so that physical work on laying the line could begin.
For the moment, the project looks a win-win situation for passengers as well as the railways. Current calculations show that the project has a rate of retun of 35 per cent, which means we can recoup the entire amount spent in about 3-4 years.
While a second line will allow more passenger trains to run on the route— up from the current 12-18 per day— the real benefits, CR officials said, was for the goods traffic. “Electrification will allow us to run goods trains with a total payload of 5,800 tons. This would be an increase of more than 50 per cent in payload which in turn brings that much more revenue and also saves time. Time saved on a route allows us to add trains” said a senior CR official.

CR is very very slow compare to other division. Final Location survey, land Acquisition and Tenders are done long time back. Sufficient fund already allocated to this project. Still no ground work started yet. This project it will take 20 yr for compilation, If this kind of delay happen.

However, a senior Railway Ministry official said “The new trains are pressed into service catering to the demand of the people and railways does not differentiate between states.”

When Kerala - TN elections took place recently, they did't start trains even on that new Palani-Palakkad line after GC. Because they knew their chances of winning there was zero.
Now for poll bound UP, squeezing IR for all its worth for each and every vote.
something looks up for Karnataka before 2018 elections, since they have a shot here. Atleast one or two passengers/DEMUs for new lines would be nice.
