May 26 2017 (13:43)   Mumbai-Goa Tejas Express: ‘Tasteless breakfast, weird combinations’

passengers travelling on board Tejas Express from Mumbai on Friday morning were shocked with the breakfast served to them on the luxury train, which boasted of a catering service.
Travellers who opted for non-vegetarian meal were served omlet with rusk, juice, butter and jam. “We know of omlet-bread or pav combination, but have never heard of omlet-toast. How can senior citizens have rusk with omlet,” asked Ramesh Nevalkar, 68, who was travelling to Kudal from Mumbai.
Ramesh Nevalkar was not happy with the service. (HT)
were served upma with rusk, a cup cake, tea mix, juice, butter and jam. “The food was disappointing. Upma was tasteless, so we returned it,” said a woman on the train.
Some had issues with the timing too. “The quantity is not much. We were told it would be a meal. Also, the breakfast was served at 8.30am, which is too late considering some had to leave from their home at 3am to board the train from Mumbai,” said Bhakti Masurkar, a Goregaon resident.
Corn flakes was an addition on the menu in executive class.
The tea and coffee vending machines, too, were nowhere to be seen . “Despite the fares being higher than Rajdhani and Shatabdi, we were just provided breakfast, not lunch,” sajd Mahesh Pavaskar, a journalist from Mumbai, who was heading on a vacation.
The WiFi, too, is limited to single executive coaches.
Some passengers complained the lever of their seats was not moving smoothly.

May 24 2017 (06:23)   Cabinet to okay using part of fuel cess to develop national waterways

NEW DELHI: The Cabinet on Wednesday is likely to approve using a part of the fuel cess for developing more national waterways. The cess is currently used for developing and maintaining national highways, state roads and railway over and under bridges. The decision to earmark 2.5% of the Central Road Fund (CRF) by amending the law is likely to pump in around Rs 2,000 crore annually for the inland waterways sector against the present annual allocation of only Rs 300 crore.
CRF is a non-lapsable fund created under the Central Road Fund Act 2000 out of a cess imposed on petrol and high-speed diesel. The annual cess collected is approximately Rs 80,000 crore. Sources said the present share of cess for
rural roads, state highways and railway over bridges will remain unchanged. "The share for inland waterways will come from the present share of 41.5% for the national highways. Waterways are being promoted as an alternate and clean mode of transport for passengers and goods. These will also reduce congestion on roads and put a check on road fatalities," a government source said. Nitin Gadkari, who holds the portfolios of both highways and shipping minister, had move this proposal to fast-track development of waterways. This is for the first time when the Centre has put focus on developing waterways, though the government had enacted a law for developing such stretches way back in 1986. The shipping ministry has already notified 111 network of rivers and canals stretching 14,500 kms as national waterways paving the road for their development. Currently cargo movement along the five existing national waterways is around 3% of all cargo movement in India. Gadkari has set the target to increase this share to 15%. Transport of good by waterways is almost 70% cheaper than moving goods by road.

Transportation over water is much cheaper than over rails. So the development of waterways is a big threat for IRly because it will snatch away the bulk freight traffic, which presently is the bread & butter of IR.

May 23 2017 (14:39)   New railway terminal to be set up in Gurugram: Suresh Prabhu

ROHTAK: Railway minister Suresh Prabhu today announced that a new rail terminal, having world-class facilities, will be set up in Gurugram to reduce the mounting pressure on Delhi.
"The work on this project will start soon. Besides, Rohtak railway station will be developed as a model station under public-private-partnership (PPP) mode," he said at a programme organised by the Northern Railways here.

dedicated the newly-electrified railway section between Rohtak and Jind to the people and extended greetings on the occasion of Ram Navami to them. Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar was present on the occasion.
The Union minister also flagged-off a new DEMU train between Jind and Sonipat through video conference and said tender for Rohtak-Meham-Hansi railway line will be finalised in August and the work in expected to be completed by the end of December, 2019.
The proposed Rail Coach Factory in Sonipat district would be developed on PPP mode and work on this will start at the earliest, Prabhu said.
Informing that electrification work has been completed on about 42 per cent of the total rail network in the state he said, "This figure will be doubled in the next five years." The railways will save Rs 41,000 crore in coming 10 years by installing solar power plants, wind power plants and LED lights, Prabhu said, adding with an aim to promote greenery, five crore saplings are also being planted by the railways.
The Union minister said investment in railways has increased to Rs 3.5 lakh crore in the last two-and-a-half years. The present Union government has increased the annual share of Haryana in Rail Budget to Rs 1,247 crore for 2017-18, which was Rs 314 crore from 2009 to 2014, he said.
Survey work on the 55-km long Yamunanagar-Jagadhari- Kurukshetra-Ladwa link and 65-km on Kaithal-Patiala link has been approved for this fiscal, Prabhu said. Speaking on the occasion, Khattar thanked the Railway Minister for the new rail projects and said work on elevated railway line on Rohtak-Gohana stretch has already started which would help in decongesting traffic in Rohtak.
"This is the first-ever elevated rail track of Indian railways being built for smoother road traffic in densely populated areas. The work on this project will soon be completed," the Chief Minister said. He said provision of Rs 100 crore has been made in this budget for joint venture projects to be undertaken with the railways.
Haryana's Finance Minister, Abhimanyu, lauded the railway minister "for his initiative for eliminating the age-old system of separate budget presentation for Railways."
"Now, the railway minister is making concerted efforts to accelerate the pace of development of rail infrastructure in the country. A joint venture of special purpose vehicle has been made between the railways and the state government for rapid implementation of various rails projects in the state, he said.
