Longest Waiting List:
.
Check the attached image. Has anyone seen a longer WL than this? The booking number has already reached WL 1107 and still 2.5 days to go. Looks like all Pune ppl want to go to Nagpur to watch the India-SL match!

Just imagine the area consumed by just this Waiting List alone on the reservation board at Pune Junction platform 2-3.

PUZZLE... PUZZLE... PUZZLE...
Lets exercise our brains for change.
.
2 trains, with 16 coaches each, are travelling in opposite direction on a single line and approaching each other. The station where they are supposed to cross each other has a loop line that can accommodate maximum 10 coaches. How will they cross each other?
Make

suitable assumptions as per the operations of our trains [no assumptions like lift coaches by crane etc]
Hint : This is technically possible.

Good solution.. Just one small change. Rather than splitting train 10+6, you can split 8+8, because the loop line can accommodate only 10 coaches or 9 coaches + 1 engine. So keep some free space there. Also the load on the B train engine reduces from 26 coaches to 24 coaches.

please run the trains form the begining with engine in middle throughout the journey.
A=8+E+8, B= 8+E+8.

Puzzle for Puzzling all !!
In reality Railway rules never allows such crossings with passengers .
It is possible for Shunting purposes only(empty coaches/racks).

Since its not in reality, its a "puzzle", else it would have been "problem" seeking a "solution"

Hi All,
I am planning to travel to Tirupati with 13 members of my family. Is it better to book tickets online or at counter so that all members will be in same coach ?
Please guide me.

Berth allocation starts from the middle of the coach, not side.

It all depends on what is available at time of booking. But assuming 100% of the berths are vacant, the allocation starts from centre.

Need info for tatkal booking at PRS at Begumpet, Secunderabad Rly Stn. The Tatkal booking is from 8 am - by what time should one be in the queue to ensure that you are the first in the queue? Is there a separate queue for Tatkal?

Sir, the query is very specific to Begumpet PRS, so no point of going all over India.

The load on PRS is very high between 8 AM to 9 AM. This is because the general quota opens for trains leaving after 90 days and the Tatkal quota opens for trains leaving after 2 days. This means a huge queue for passengers at reservation counters, and on the internet, passengers for both the requirements login at the same time, from more than one sessions, and keep on giving continuous requests to the server. At the same time, they ask 2 more ppl to try to book tickets, and send someone to the counter. Eventually, they end up increasing the load on server atleast 4-5 times, and sometimes booking 2-3 tickets for the same journey. Then they keep the best
...

and cancel the rest. Until all this happens, users get irritated by "Page Not Found", "Service Unavailable", "Failed Transaction" kind of issues as well.
.
I have a solution to distribute the load.
.
Let the Tatkal quota open at 8 AM 2 days in advance of the train date, but keep the opening time of general quota at 10 AM (only for opening day) 90 days in advance of the train date. In this way, both type of passengers will not hit the PRS at the same time, and internet users can get more availability and reliability of server.
.
A more restrictive implementation would be that 8 AM to 9 AM timeslot should be exclusively reserved only for Tatkal ticket bookings in IRCTC. For all other bookings, users should try before 8 AM or after 9 AM. Again this way, the load on server will be distributed. (This also means that general quotas will open only at 9 AM 90 days in advance of the train date).
.
Any suggestions or issues foreseen in this implementation?

Note that the Rs 60 or Rs 20 there is per person. So its Rs 240 for confirmed + Rs 80 for WL; add IRCTC and bank charges.

If you are talking of 1 direction only, then 04012 Nizamuddin Shirdi exp covers 1360 kms in one day between start and end station alone.
