An Indian man has entered the record books after making a rail journey to Delhi on a 26-year-old ticket.
On 19th Jan 2000 Fakhruddin Takulla ( India ) travelled from Mumbai ( Bombay ) to New Delhi, both India, using a ticket he had purchased on 15 July 1973 – 26 years 6 months earlier. Takulla used the unlimited booking service offered by the Indian Railway Authority so that he could attend the celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of Indian Independence.
Shri Fakhruddin Takulla, resident of Bombay, shocked the reservation clerk on

duty at Western Railway's reservation office some time in 1973 when he approached him to book an AC Chair Car ticket to travel from Bombay Central to New Delhi by the Rajdhani Express 27 years later in January, 2000! Such bookings were then allowed under Railway Board's experimental scheme to permit would-be passengers to book their reservations in all trains without any time cap. Initially the clerk was reluctant for he had no calendar for 2000 to know whether the train would run on the specified date 27 years later for the Rajdhani then (in 1973) used to run only thrice a week. Further it was also too much of an 'unnecessary' hassle for the clerk to keep records, etc., safely for the next millennium. But the enterprising Shri Takulla would not give up as he produced a manual calendar, which he had drawn up himself, to let the clerk know the exact day and date of date of his journey! Finally, thus, he got his precious ticket for Rs 120/-.
Later Shri Takulla indeed took the journey to New Delhi by the Rajdhani Express to arrive there well in time to see the Golden Jubilee Republic Day celebrations in January 2000. He was grateful to Allah for keeping him alive to see the destined day 27 years later.
Indian Railways played the good Samaritan for they exchanged his ticket gratis for AC 3-tier class as by 2000 the AC Chair Car class had vanished from the Rajdhani. They also gave him a VIP treatment by deputing a railway official to receive him at New Delhi station on arrival and arranged for his lodging in New Delhi at a railway guesthouse for 8 days, and also arranged for his return journey at no cost to him. Shri Takulla was also given a place in the VIP gallery to watch the Republic Day celebrations. 'We felt that a person who could think of doing this 27 years ago obviously had tremendous faith in the reliability of the Indian railway network and we felt that we needed to acknowledge that and respond to it adequately,' said Shri Shanti Narain, member of the Railway Board.
At 61, Fakruddin Takulla now wants to book a ticket for 2038 - when he will be 100.His dream now is to go to his ancestral home in Kaparwaj, in the western state of Gujarat.

There would be some form of record keeping that railways would have preserved. He had a valid ticket as it was purchased under the unlimited booking scheme which was started by railways on an experimental basis!

Maybe it was that way.
Either way that is too much of a risky venture for me.
He was plain lucky that the railway acknowledged it.

Do you plan to travel from mumbai to trivandrum all the way? I am asking because air ticket from mumbai to trivandrum is about Rs. 3800 (for a week later). 2A fare on this train is 2700. If you book online, another 100 will be added. So for 1000 more, you can reach trivandrum in 2 hours! Just my opinion!

It is surprising that there are no dedicated trains between Mumbai and Delhi apart from Rajdhani, Duronto, Garib Rath and Sampark Kranti some of which dont even have daily run. I mean, only Sampark Kranti has SL class which sees huge demand and waiting list. Railways should make Sampark Kranti daily. I wonder why they have not increased the frequency of this train although it is been running since more than a decade!

Mumbai is still attached directly with delhi by many dedicated end to end weeklies.
What you will say regarding Pune , Solapur , Nagpur , Kolhapur ? These are the next largest cities of maharashtra but see the number of dedicated trains they have for Delhi ?
Most severely affected is Pune which is the second largest city and the most demanding city , but has only 1 Biweekly dedicated duronto for Delhi.

should start a daily superfast train from kolhapur to Delhi via Pune-Kyn-BSR-BRC-KOTA.

The name of this train should have never been changed. The name 'Frontier' evoked historical aspects and value of this train. All our folks who regularly travel on this train still call it Frontier Mail in our conversations!

It still runs upto Frontier of India, wagah border is just few kms from Amritsar! Frontier mail was a historic train and hence it should have been remained as Frontier Mail forever. Mumbai has several landmarks. Yet not a single train is named after any single landmark of Mumbai!

Just checked, a Mumbai Ahmedabad air ticket for Feb 23rd (Not much in advance) is Rs. 1500 which is less than Executive Chair Car ticket on Shatabdi and not a great deal more than CC or 3A or 2A on other trains. In the future, airlines will become more favorable for even short distances. In such a scenario, bullet trains whose tickets will be much costlier than Shatabdi will not be preferred. In my opinion, it is a waste to spend so much money on building Bullet train infrastructure. Look what E. Sreedharan of Konkan Railways & Delhi Metro fame has to say -> click here Your comments are welcome!

Yes, it is less costly to build airports as you just need land for 2 airports at both ends. For railways, land is required for the whole route and then there is cost to maintain the infrastructure. Building elevated route increases the cost too. Such projects in India are known to get delayed and their budget increase exponentially due to bureaucracy & red tape. As more and more people start traveling by air, air travel will become more and more affordable as economies of scale comes into picture. Right now, no country apart from China is looking to build costly Bullet Trains because it is not worth in this age of low cost air travel. Even China is facing problems with bullet trains!

A valid point, but also one thing to consider is the population. Passenger movements on the scale present in India can never be handled by Airways and neither can airports be provided everywhere. While I do wish to see High speed trains in India, I am skeptical about the execution of the proposed project, that too with such a large expenditure.
But, it is always better to invest in a next-generation infrastructure. The economy of scale you mentioned, will also hamper the introduction of such technology as in the future. The more, such an infrastructure upgrade is delayed, the more difficult it becomes to introduce it any time in the future. Even at the simple rolling stock/
...

locomotive/ signalling level, this is very much visible in IR. IR's network and operation continuously expanded for close to 30 years without any significant infrastructure updates or technology updates, because of which, now it is becoming very difficult to switch to a new technology. Just see the delay in the adoption of 3 phase locomotives and LHB coaches ( both of which arrived almost 20 years ago!). The sheer size of the existing operations mean that any kind of upgrade, even if it is beneficial, is very uneconomical in the short term. And in our country, where every politician is ready to pounce on such decisions ( harmful in the short term but useful in the long term), it becomes even more difficult to add any such enhancements.
