I was comparing air fares between metros (Mumbai-Delhi, Kolkata- Delhi, Chennai-Delhi, Bangalore-Delhi etc) and found out that even fares for travel dates of just 1 week in advance right now are almost equal to 2A fares on Rajdhanis and slightly above normal 2A fares. If you book more in advance, you can even get cheaper fares. Given this scenario, why would anyone travel by train (I am not talking about intermediate passengers) when they can fly and save 90% of the time for almost the same fare. Even 3A passengers can pay slightly more and fly. The Indian government should now focus on aviation as much as they do on railways as air travel is the way of the future. Aviation should now be given lot of importance and rules and regulations should be changed such that it favors air travel. Railways is also important, no doubt.

Haha, so because of 2-3 hrs wastage of getting boarding pass, you will endure 20-25 hours of rail travel. Nice! Also, I am not talking about a specific case. You are right in your perspective. I was talking more on a general terms. Air travel has to be given more importance now. Building of railways require huge land area for laying tracks and other infrastructure and manpower for maintenance which is not easy in India and which can take decades. Air travel on the other hand just requires airport land! And as we progress, air travel is getting more and more affordable and efficient!

Air Travel is affordable and efficient ????
Lol...Airlines are Private companies...We all saw what happened with Kingfisher airlines...How it got vanished Overnight....Air India is also on same path...If Govt stops funding Air India , soon it will also get vanished....Our Aviation Fuel is 100% means if We have to make our Airplanes fly in Air , then we have to keep on Asking Persian Gulf , Europe countries to Import us Aviation Fuels.
A country Can't Never sustain only on the shoulder of Airlines.
Is NOT FOOL to invest Huge amount of money just to lay down tracks and tracks...If China kind of Country is doing its best for developing Railways structure , then whats the problem with Us ?? We are far MORE POORER than China.
Northeast states people regularly use Flights to travel as they don't have proper Railways connectivity , but still when Tracks reached northeast for 1st time , they welcomed it and celebrated for it.
Indian Railways is the FACE of India.

Yes train fares and air fares are now getting marginally closer, and offten they even get equal to the railways fare. Railway needs to re calculate its strategy of earning.

3A are bulk carriers in AC travel. As long as govt keeps enough difference between fares of 3A and flights, railways will have advantage. Having said that
I think govt. needs to take holistic approach in developing transport sector airways, railways & roadways such that they complement each other. There can be a transport secretary under which coordination among various bodies can take place. So we can develop highways/expressways, high speed/semi-high speed rail, big modern airports for metro cities as well as no frill airports for medium & small cities.
We should move
furiously in capacity augmentation in railways(new lines, electrification, gc, doubling/tripling etc.) as well as increase in speed, a semi-high speed diamond grid(160-200 kmph) can do wonders for pan India connectivity.
Typically for metro cities(population 50 lac+) which have distance of 500-700 km we can plan High speed rail(Bullet train) for future when our present and planned airport capacities saturate. Many studies show that upto distance of 700 km high speed rail can compete with airways and can divert most of passengers to itself. For distance more than 1000 km airways gains significantly.
For distance upto 200-250 km it is found expressways are best mode for high speed travel. So routes like Delhi-Jaipur, Delhi-Chandigarh etc. should be developed.

Indian Railways even at today's cost (at least for SL class) has one of the lowest costs of transportation compared to world standards. Now, Indians protest whenever fares are increased. Indians want world class facilities but don't want to pay for it. There is no free lunch! Railways should remove quotas in railway seat reservations. A large number of quotas exist that eat up a lot of seats that are not available for general quota. A lot of mal practices and frauds happen by agents and railway officials who sell these seats (If remained unsold) at a premium thereby depriving the railways of the revenue!

Too much slack in the schedule of this train. Today's train (11/6) passed Shamgarh 1hr 22 mins late after its scheduled time but it covered majority of the delay within 133 kms and reached Ratlam just 15 mins late!

That's because enough slack is available in its schedule as its average speed is just 55 kmph! Hence, it can cover up easily. Not a big deal!

And considering the distance of 12295/12296 which is 2719 km , a speed of 55 KMPH , is not a "just" speed...

And also consider the fact that 12295/12296 has to undergo through 2 loco reversals + loco change and 1 loco change , in all 3 LC as well..
so I hope nw u know y 55 kmph is a good speed..

I saw on social media about rules change in railways and that there will no longer be system of waitlist and that tickets will only be issues if it's confirm or RAC. This is absurd and doesn't make any sense. Is this true???

Ok, got it. Makes sense now but for all trains, it would be too much. For example, if a ticket is not available, a person who is busy in his work or life will have no time to continuosly check when tickets will become available so he or she may like to book a waitlisted ticket. Removing waitlist from all trains doesn't seem feasible or practical!

As of now there seems to be no limit on the number of waitlists for trains hence you can see lots of waitlisted psngrs in reserved coaches. To some extent this will stop if the new thing is implemented. But having said that i think they should not entirely remove waitlists.
They can set a lower limit on the maximum number of wait lists issued for a train and even after that if tickets are still available closer to journey date, either add it to tatkal quota or issue through counter as current reservation [This might be a weird suggestion though !!]

As I have heard that railways loses money on SL tickets so I believe it serves well for railways as people travel on W/L tickets and railways gets the reveue. If W/L is removed, people are anyways gonna travel, they will just buy current 2nd class ticket and the TTEs will make a killing. The railways will be the biggest loser!
