May 30 2017 (01:11)   Extended trial runs for Train Collision Avoidance System - The Hindu

System said to be cheaper than similar technology available in advanced nations
It’s been nearly two years since the Train Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) — also known as Automatic Train Protection (ATP) — was tested for the first time in the South Central Railway. After scores of trial runs under various conditions across the country, the railway authorities are preparing to have more full-fledged runs soon.
In the next few months, the trail runs would be covering the Lingampalli–Vikarabad–Wadi and Vikarabad–Bidar sections, up to a total length of 250 kilometres. About 40 locomotives

— 20 electrical and 20 diesel — would be put to use for the purpose, according to Chief Signal and Telecommunications Engineer M.S. Mahaboob Ali.
Mr. Ali, who had earlier overseen the initial train runs carried out in the division between Lingampalli-Vikarabad-Tandur-Koukuntla railway stations on the Begumpet-Wadi section, said the operational part of TCAS was tested here for suitability, inter-operability, and signalling.
For the extended trial runs, railway engineers are going to take up key infrastructure on the routes identified, like tower foundations and installation of necessary equipment. The indigenously developed system by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO), Lucknow, is said to be cheaper compared to similar technology available in Europe and other advanced nations.
Local requirements
Since Indian railways has its own peculiarities in control centres, interlocking between stations, braking systems, etc., TCAS was designed to suit local requirements to provide protection by ensuring trains do not pass signal at danger, controlling speed at turns, restricting speed, avoiding collisions when more than one train is on the track, and when loco-pilots are unable to control the train.
Through this, loco pilots get real-time display of signals inside the cabin, also indicating the distance to be travelled safely. “It improves the safety in train operations and also allows loco pilots to drive trains at maximum speed with confidence, especially when visibility is low,” said General Manager Vinod Kumar Yadav, in a recent interaction.
TCAS is a step above the Automatic Warning System (AWS) and the Anti-Collision Device (ACD) used in some railway lines across the country. It traces the location of the train through the distance traversed from RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) tags installed on tracks, and transmits the signal to all other trains in the vicinity. More than 1,500 trails were conducted to check the functionality and address any teething issues so that the system could be deployed throughout the rail network, Mr. Ali said.

May 28 2017 (22:53)   Tejas Express: Railways to provide Rs 30 headphones after 337 stolen | mumbai news | Hindustan Times

A total of 337 headphones distributed to passengers for the entertainment systems on-board the Mumbai-Goa Tejas Express were stolen in just four round trips after it debuted last Monday, a railway source said.
For its fifth trip on Saturday from CST, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) provided low-cost headphones.
The IRCTC spokesperson did not confirm the number of missing headphones, but said that it had bought 1,000 headphones, each costing Rs30

Indian Railway had introduced the systems to provide a flight-like travel experience for passengers.
The train has 990 seats across 13 passenger coaches, including an executive coach that has more comfortable seats with neck and leg rests.
The system has preloaded games, movies and songs, besides FM channels. For the first four trips, headphones of a leading brand were handed over to passengers before the start of the journey.
However, after the first trip itself, the train came back with fewer headphones, damaged infotainment screens and waste strewn all over.
The cost of each headphone was around Rs200. The new ones will cost Rs30 each, a source said.
“Many passengers do not return the headphones before alighting and take those with them thinking that its cost was included in their ticket fare,”said an attendant on the train.
He said the on-board staff are now afraid that IRCTC might recover the cost of missing headphones from their salary.
Without catering services, a Tejas Express chair-car and executive-car ticket between Mumbai and Goa costs Rs 1,285 and Rs2,585, respectively.
According to an IRCTC source, from Friday’s trip, instead of distributing headphones to the passengers, staffers issued the headphones to the passengers after noting down their seat details and collected it from them.
It considerably brought down the number of missing headphones, the source said.
Meanwhile, many of the 990 infotainment screens were also found damaged.
According to officials, passengers damaged the buttons of three screens by pressing hard on them with an object. There were scratches on many screens.
Many passengers who travelled on the train on Friday complained about inedible food and poor WiFi.
Travellers who chose the non-vegetarian meal were served an omelette with rusk, juice, butter and jam.
Vegetarians, who were served upma with rusk, a cupcake, tea, juice, butter and jam, also said the meal did not meet their expectations.
In addition, WiFi was only available to passengers travelling in the executive chair car, and even they complained about weak signals and connection issues.

New Delhi, May 26: The Indian Railways has now been mulling to provide low-quality headphones after some of the headphones went missing from the Tejas Express on its maiden journey from Delhi to Mumbai on May 22. According to the reports, around 8-10 headphones had gone missing out of a total of 1000 that were provided to the passengers in the Tejas Express. While there were reports of the headphones being stolen from the train on its maiden journey, the passengers reportedly had complaints about the combination of the food served in Tejas Express.
According to the reports, the passengers have also made complaints about the cleanliness in the train. The reports also have it that the passengers who opted for non-vegetarian

food were served omlette with rusk, juice, butter and jam. “We know of omlette-bread or pav combination, but have never heard of omlette-toast. How can senior citizens have rusk with omlette,” asked Ramesh Nevalkar, reported Hindustan Times.
Some even had issues about the quantity of food and the time at which it was served. “The quantity is not much. We were told it would be a meal. Also, the breakfast was served at 8.30am, which is too late considering some had to leave home at 3am to board the train,” said a passenger, reports HT.
“We may provide low-cost headphone because the present ones cost around Rs 200-300. However, the voice quality may not be great,” said DK Sharma, Central Railway general manager.
He also said that the authorities have also been thinking of some other options that will make sure that the good quality headphones are not stolen from the Tejas Express and also confirmed that there are no plans to withdraw headphones from the train for now. Sharma also appealed to passengers to not steal or damage the train as it will only impact the onboard services in future.

Jocularly speaking, Today on one hand "they" steal head phones and LED screens and on the other hand complain of food quality. Tomorrow even if the food quality improves, there may be complain that the food quantity is not enough to get the leftover parcelled!!
The combination of snacks served in Tejas is really funny and is an indication that the persons involved does not have basic minimum idea about it.

seriously speaking, "Public" is a very unpredictable and diverse in real sense. And the worst part is, just "like one bad fish can dirty the whole pond", a "minority of wrong doers bring shame to whole populace". 8-10 headphones missing out of 1000 is not a very big number but cannot be ignored.
-
A thorough investigation is required, when the things were actually stolen. Stealing by paxs is very difficult as there were CCTV cameras working throughout the journey of train in addition to presence of paxs in a well patronised train. It needs to be investigated, whether there is any loophole in the camera system. Surprisingly there is no news about stealing of taps from the Tejas. No theft of the taps indicate that the theft has happened in the yard.
-
If paxs are found to be stealing headphones, IR may provide headphone on rent to paxs through attendants or they may bring their headphones and plug in during the journey.
