Russia's 5 changes to increase Indian Railways' train speed to 200 kmph
Russian Railways is helping India's national transporter increase the speed of its passenger trains up to 200 km per hour. Russian Railways is at present collaborating with Indian Railways on a 575-km stretch between Nagpur and Secunderabad and submitted a preliminary report last week. Here are 5 changes that Russia has suggested to make trains run at 200/kmph in India.
1. New Rakes
Indian Railways doesn't have coaches that can move with a speed of 200 km per hour, a new type of passenger cars needs to be approved as well.
2. Infrastructural changes
It has, however, expressed concern over "a number of large bridges with speed limits" on this particular stretch and has recommended a detailed survey of all these structures on the basis of which measures for reconstruction/repair will be taken up. To reach the desired speed limit, Russian Railways has proposed several technical and technological solutions, including reconstruction of railway alignment as well as treating the earth bed where there are speed restrictions.
3. Change in railroad switches
It has also been pointed out that railroad switches, which enables trains to shift from one track to another, at stations on this stretch are not suitable for a speed of 200 km per hour and a different type of switch has been recommended.
4. Digital network
A digital technological communication network for the entire section, instead of the existing radio communication, was also proposed.
5. Safety measures
A high-speed rail network will also require safety measures for pedestrians and motor vehicles at rail crossings. Keeping this in mind, overpasses, anti-collision and anti-ram barriers, as well as automatic alarm systems have been suggested. A protective fencing along the length of the rail track was mooted in order to prevent accidents with people and animals on the track. The Russian Railways also suggested noise shields for tracks near residential areas.
A protocol for this project was signed between the railway ministries of the two countries in October last year.
The high-speed project will be jointly financed and the cost will be split equally between the two countries.
Currently, the fastest train in India is Gatimaan Express with top speed of 160 km per hour.

Sabke Same and Common suggestions hote h ... like ... (new) LHB rakes , infrastructure , advance signals, safety etc. etc. Chahe Indian ho Russian ho ya koi or . But ye sab karne ke liye jo Paisa lagega wo kha se aaye iska koi solution nhi btata. Paise hi ho to kisi ke suggestions ki jarurat nhi, infra thik hoga to apne aap speed increase ho jayegi. Dont expect high speed on these highly congested routes. Agar koi chance hoga to wo DFC complete hone ke baad hi ho sakta h

Hundreds of studies and thousands of recommendations has been there for improvement of IR, but nothing is going to happen in practice.
Bring in fiscal discipline in every nook and corner of IR, have rational fares for paxs & freight, invest only in profit making/ operationally essential projects, rationalise subsidies/concessions for 5 years, rationalise the existing trains - all the targets of speed, safety, punctuality etc sof IR shall be achieved.

What about Work ethic and professionalism?
Until things like "Minister is on board, let's prioritize this train" or "GM is visiting, let's get the repair and other works done" etc are not eliminated, this system will remain like this.
In European countries, if a train is delayed by 30 minutes, people start watching out for news. Such a situation does not only requires arrangements of good rakes and signaling and other advanced things but also a highly professional environment.

To battle fund crunch, Indian Railways may link fares to inflation
Facing a severe cash crunch, the Indian Railways was looking to link passenger fares with inflation, sources said, stressing the need for radical steps to improve the finances of the world’s fourth biggest train network.
The fares could be linked to the consumer price index (CPI), which basically means that with a rise in shop-end prices, fares will also go up.
radical steps need to be taken and this can be one of them. Linking passenger fares with the CPI will enable the railways to recover costs,” an official said on condition of anonymity. CPI index tracks shop-end prices of a select basket of goods.
Though railways ferry 23 million people every day, its passenger earnings are dismal. This year’s losses in passenger earnings are estimated to be around Rs 30, 000 crore, that too at a time when the public transporter needs an additional Rs 32,000 crore to implement the seventh pay panel recommendations.
Fares are a touchy issue, as rail because of cheap tickets and an extensive network is the only mode of transport for a majority of Indians.
With the transporter failing to meet targets for passenger earnings in the first two quarters of this fiscal, the option of raising fares in the upper-class travel is limited. “But linkage with the CPI will enable the railways to raise fares of the unreserved class without attracting adverse reactions. Fares can be adjusted in accordance with the CPI calculations on a quarterly or half yearly basis,” the official said.
This year’s losses in passenger segment are estimated to be around Rs 30,000 crore.
The move will enable transporter to fix fares in accordance with the cost incurred.
It will address freight versus fare distortions. For every rupee earned by the railways, 66 paisa comes from freight and 28 paisa from passenger fares. Freight earnings are diverted to subsidise fares.
Fare hike decisions will get de-politicised
It will ease up finances at a time when the transporter is required to make Rs 32,000 crore payouts towards implementing the Pay Commission recommendations.
The suggestion, one of many, was made during a rail shivir (introspection camp) addressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Haryana’s Surajkund in November, sources said.
At present, freight earnings subsidise passenger fares. For every rupee earned by the railways, 66 paise come from freight and only 28 paise from passenger fares.
Recovery from ticket sales is among the lowest in India. The Indian Railways earns just 1 cent from each passenger as against 9.4 cents earned by the Japan Railways, 6.7 cents by the Russian Railways, 6.2 cents by the Deutsche Bahn (German Railways) and 2.7 cents by the Chinese Railways, says a 2012 World Bank study.
The Modi government recently introduced “dynamic pricing” for a certain category of trains but has refrained from taking the “tough” decision of raising fares of the unreserved or general class passengers.

Not going to help IR in long run. Unless the general class fares are increased substantially and subsidy brought burden down to reasonable levels, the find crunch is going to stay with IR.
Why IR fail to understand is whether your increase the already high ac fares on the pretext of flexi-fares of Suvidha or special fares, or the linking it to inflation, the ac class paxs(ACI,ACII) shall continue to migrate towards airlines. Resulting in IR saddled with more and more loss giving nonac paxs.

With huge development in the networks of express ways, a new competitor i.e. luxury buses is presently lurking in dark and may come into picture any time with a bang and poach ACIII,ACII class paxs.
IR should evaluate the reason-ability of its fare vis-a-vis the facility given to pax and then think of raising fares suitably for different classes, rather than try to find a good sounding reason for lump sum increase fares.
"The Indian Railways earns just 1 cent from each passenger as against 9.4 cents earned by the Japan Railways, 6.7 cents by the Russian Railways, 6.2 cents by the Deutsche Bahn (German Railways) and 2.7 cents by the Chinese Railways, says a 2012 World Bank study". By giving such data and trying to justify price rise, IR is befooling itself as well as the public. Quality of service given too have to be taken into account while comparing the earning per passenger. In the European countries most of the long distance trains are air conditioned and much faster than our shatabdies/ gatimaan. If we compare the earning per ac pax of IR with others, then it may be altogether a different story.

22 km Ola Mini fare Rs 365/- equivalent to 700 km SL fare. An Ola cab driver hardly earns 15-18k a month whereas a LP earns around 45-50k after the recommendation of 7cpc. Shows about the abysmal fare structure in Indian Railways.

Ambala division seeks railway nod to raise speed to 130kmph of Shatabdi on Chandigarh-Delhi route

In a bid to reduce the travel time between Chandigarh and Delhi on a Shatabdi by 20 minutes, the Northern Railway’s Ambala division has applied for permission to run the train at 130 km per hour (kmph).
The existing speed of Shatabdi train between Chandigarh and
Delhi is 110 kmph. Railway officials said they expect to increase the speed of all Shatabdi trains in the next two months.
Ambala divisional railway manager Dinesh Kumar on Wednesday said: “We have submitted a proposal to the railway headquarters to increase the speed of Shatabdi trains to 130 kmph. We are expecting to increase the speed of trains in the next two months.”
He added that at a speed of 130 kmph, the journey between Delhi and Chandigarh on Shatabdi would be decreased by 20 minutes. “The trains will run at 130kmph between Delhi and Ambala only. Later, once the doubling work of the tracks between Dapper (near Ambala) and Chandigarh is completed, the Shatabdi trains would run at 130 kmph between Ambala and Chandigarh as well,” said Kumar.
Three Shatabdi trains ply between Chandigarh-New Delhi-Chandigarh per day and the existing speed of each train is 110 kmph. The approx travel time from on a Shatabdi train from Delhi to Chandigarh is less than four hours.
Recently, the Northern Railways has increased the speed of Amritsar-Shatabdi to 130 kmph. Railway officials said they are upgrading the railway tracks in the country that would help increase the speed of many trains in the future.
The railways has also introduced premier Tejas trains on Delhi-Chandigarh route and according to the officials, the duration from the city to Delhi on this train would be around three hours.
The railway officials said they take all the necessary measures to ensure the safety of all trains that run at higher speed.
“The trains undergo several tests before they are introduced on the tracks. We take several measures to ensure that the trains run smoothly at higher speed,” Northern Railways chief public relations officer Neeraj Sharma said. He added that several trains in the country are running at 160 kmph.

"Northern Railways chief public relations officer Neeraj Sharma added that several trains in the country are running at 160 kmph"
Hard to believe. Which trains other than Gatimaan are running at 160kmph?.
Looks like reporter has added the news and not the NR CPRO.
Earlier the Shatabdies on NDLS-UMB route were running at 120kmph and covered the distance non stop in 2:23 hrs
only. But the speed was reduced to 110kmph after a derailment on the section and 1 or 2 stops were introduced leading to increase in the running time to 2:40 to 2:48 hrs.
The ASR shatabdi operating at 130kmph does NDLS-UMB nonstop in 2:20 hrs indicating more slack time given at present than earlier times.
