On membership growth:
This site crossed 100,000 members on Aug 15 of this year, after almost 4 years of going live. Now, we are set to cross 200,000 - the last 100,000 members signed up in the span of a mere 3 months, and the membership continues to ramp up at a steady pace.
Factors contributing to this uptick:
1. Steady introduction of new
...
features, in response to member feedback.
2. Scaling up of the software/hardware to respond to the increasing load. In fact, recent efforts have resulted in the site currently being more responsive and faster than ever.
3. Establishment of a stable community of members, who continue to have confidence in this site.
4. Very effective moderation by our Admins and the recent curbing and controlling of "trolling" activities.
The last factor has been particularly significant in retaining our members and attracting new members.
What is a troll? Please check this Wikipedia entry. [click here|http://bit.ly/32kdjK] Trolls are not spammers or vandals. They are more sophisticated disrupters of forums, and have been a scourge on websites since the inception of the internet.
"In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking readers into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion."
Such people are obsessed with certain websites or topics. They have dozens of IDs and logins. They have plenty of time. They frequent one or more related websites, and seek to cause trouble.
Another class are what are known as "Concern Trolls". The concern troll posts in Web forums devoted to its declared point of view and attempts to sway the group's actions or opinions while claiming to share their goals, but with professed "concerns". The goal is to sow fear, uncertainty and doubt within the group.
Examples: If this website does not offer certain features, the Concern Troll will deliberately ask questions about that feature, leading our members to answer them in a predictable manner, i.e. This site does not offer that feature. You should go to website B to access that feature. This way a concern troll accomplishes successful propaganda for their point of view.
The sole purpose of the Concern Troll is to cause uncertainty, doubt and suspicion among our members or else harassing and irritating them, causing them to abandon this website.
Over the past few months, the following steps have been taken:
Sophisticated software has been installed to detect long-term and persistent Internet Trolls. Once a member is flagged as a Troll, their logins are disabled and IPs blocked from accessing this site. Such members soon return under new IDs. Once again, when detected, the profiles are zapped in an instant. Their logins are disabled. Their IPs are blocked. They cannot even visit this site's home page. After 3 or 4 attempts, the troll realizes that the hard work involved in creating new IDs and disrupting a particular site, is not worth the effort and quits the site. The troll usually harbours a lot of hatred and anger for the site, and may go to other sites to defame this site. But, our software's purview is restricted to this site alone. We cannot control, and are not interested in Troll activities on other sites.
The above measures have successfully created a friendly atmosphere for our current visitors and members. Our regular members find that they are not being harassed. Insults are speedily deleted. Persistent trouble-makers are banned. As we seek to get an increasing diversity of members, "Troll-Curbing" activity will continue to be enforced.
Note to all members: Our regular members already know the guidelines of this site. Personal remarks, harassment and persistent disruption are not allowed. Violators go through the following 4 steps.
Step 1: Deletion of posts.
Step 2: Warning of suspension.
Step 3: Actual suspension.
Step 4: Flagged as a Troll.
Once you are flagged as a Troll, the software takes over, and you are banned for life from this site. There is no recourse.
Thanks, and we may soon welcome our 200,000th member.

There has recently been a lot of frustration among RFs when their Station Pics, Loco Pics, Train Pics get rejected because the "number is not showing", "shed is not visible", the loco/train is at a distance, Train Board is too small, "better pic available", etc. . To address this issue, effective tomorrow, ALL...

-@all members: As of recently, there has been a trend whereby minor name updates of Trains/Stations - whether such and such regional name should be there or not, whether the train should be called "Abc Express" or "Abc Superfast Express", etc. are threatening to take over the majority of Timeline entries. Also,...
