Hi there... Just watched a video in which the driver of the express train puts on the brake to make the train still in a very short span of time. Before putting on the brake, the train was moving close to 100 km/hr. Just googled the braking system being used in Indian Railways and found that two braking systems are being used viz. Air Brakes and vacuum brakes. just not able to distinguished one another. So if any member of IRI have any knowledge of Braking system, kindly let the other RailFans who do not know, come to know the magic of stopping a fast moving train in a few seconds.. Thanks..

Which train was it?? Passenger or Freight??
Presently IR is using Air Brake system since few years.
Vacuum brake is extinct almost from the mainlines.

braking distance for a train above 100 kph is 1000 meters. generally, for a passenger train, it depends on type and class of locomotive attached.
the crew applies the brake normally at the certain distance, where the train's speed decreases. sometimes its generally seen, they reduce the speed to certain kph n apply the at the exact moment so that the train fits in the pf, and this is generally done by experienced crew.

A miracle just happened. Wanted to book a ticket for my mom on the 19260 Bhavnagar - Kochuveli Express for July 14th on which my dad and sis had confirmed tickets.
The Availability in the General Quota from Vasai Road showed as RLWL14/WL14. There was the "Book" option on IRCTC and there were no seats left in the ladies quota. Asked mom if she really wants a WL ticket - she said yes. I went ahead and decided to book it anyway knowing that it would get cancelled anyway if it remains on WL.
Just

before the payment options page, IRCTC prompted me that there were 9 seats available for Senior Citizens (ladies above 45 yrs travelling alone) and whether I wanted to book it. I asked mom again if she wants me to book tickets for her in the S.Citizens quota. She refused again because she didnt want to be alone in a different compartment.
Decided to go ahead and book the ticket in General quota (which mind you, showed WL 14) and to my surprise, she got a confirmed ticket - that too in the same coach and not far from where my sis and dad have confirm seats!
Is there an explanation for this? Was she allotted seats from the Senior citizens quota? The ticket is in General quota. But the availability was WL/14! Where did the seat come from!??

It is SS quota. Last year I also came through same experience. I booked an E-Ticket for four person with my mother was also traveling, with availability more than 50 in AC 3, I opted for two LB. But I got 2,3,5 and 6. :(. Logic left 1 and 4 (both LB). Then I cancelled my mother's name from ticket and booked another one for her, I got Berth '1' in the same cabin :) with SS quota. Hence with two different tickets, I was having B3-1,3,5,6.

Hi, I booked a tatkal ticket in Karnataka Express through IRCTC. Got WL 52, as it was booked at 10:08 am. Decided not to travel and didn't cancel it as Waiting was high and instead booked another ticket. Just 10 minutes before chart preparation status was WL 43. After chart preparation, it was confirmed with berth Number... :). Whole money went into vain. It is a big surprise for me as waiting 52 got confirmed in this season of rush....
