NEW DELHI: While Indian Railways is grappling to improve its finances, it has found an innovative way to send the message to passengers on how Rs 34,000 crore subsidy offered annually in passenger fare is putting a heavy burden on its balance sheet.
Now tickets booked at reservation counter, including seasonal tickets, and those booked online will come with a printed message that railway get only 57 percent of fare paid by the passenger. According to railway ministry, railways earn only 57 paisa of every rupee passenger spends on fare and 43 paise is subsidy offered.    
has started printing one line below the ticket saying ‘Indian Railways recovers only 57 percent of cost of travel on an average’. The exercise has started from last one week and the idea is to tell passengers that fare are heavily subsidized.
The government run transporter loses around Rs 34,000 crore annually on passenger segments and it is cross-subsidised by freight earnings.
“We have started printing the earnings we make from passenger fare on tickets so that people know that the fares are cheapest and highly subsided. We recover 57 percent in passenger service and 37 percent in suburban services and this will reflect on tickets,” said Member Traffic, Railway Board Mohammed Jamshed.
Describing it as an awareness step, Jamshed said this will make passengers aware of the real cost involved in the travel and how much Railways is bearing the burden.
"Awareness is a must as it will lead to the rationalisation of fares which is required for the survival of the Railways," he said.
While passengers travelling by suburban and short-haul trains account for 52 percent of the traffic, their share in total passenger revenues was just around 6-7 percent. This segment accounted for around 60 per cent of the annual subsidy of Rs 34,000 crore.
There has been a view in Railway Board that passenger fare needs to be increased but being a political sensitive matter Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu has stayed away from any jump in passenger fare.  
Train fare was last increased 14.2 percent in passenger sector in all classes and 6.5 percent in freight in June 2014 by the NDA government. Since then the government has stayed away from any hike in passenger fare.

It is true that railways gets reimbursed from various ministries. But here I never mentioned quotas like sports, etc. I just mentioned about railways passes given in upper classes of trains

But that may not be the reason for loss of funds or revenue. Here we were trying to discuss the message behind loss of funds incurred with every passenger ticket issued.

company benefits go beyond the person in most cases, unless you are working as contractual labourer some where. In most firms, medical expenses and LTC are covered for both the employee and and his dependents, and in case of larger organization also give its own rest houses at subsidized rates. IR does exactly the same, except that since its employees also run the organization, it is able to provide privilege passes for them. the other passes are duty passes, but they are needed for work purpose as regular inspection are part of their duty, along with FP inspections.

From my last two trips, I noticed that the Reservation Chart is not stuck to the train 12686 MAQ - MAS SF Express, starting MAQ Central. When I checked with the AC compartment assistants, they told that reservation charts are never stuck in this train. Is this practice dropped ? Do any one know more about this ?

Yes. It's been dropped on almost all trains starting from Mangalore since long!

I think it was introduced as a Duronto, but converted to Shatabdi because of poor patronage

I agree it is using LHB rakes. But I think it is using the used LHB rakes of MYS Shatabdi. The livery of CBE Shatabdi is same as MYS one. But, I think 12007/8 has got a new LHB rake and the old rake was transferred to CBE Shatabdi.
Also with reference to Blog Entry#: 1264918-0, the name board proves that this rake was earlier used by MYS Shatabdi.

Even I doubt this cos both MYS/CBE shatabdi's have mixture of old MYS shatabdi coaches along with new blue colored one(s), at times seeing the rake(s) at different interval of time I strongly feel both have RSA..

Now that the Tambaram station is being developed as a terminal, a line bypassing CGL from CJ towards TBM, will help in reliving the pressure of MAS and MS.
This way, the special trains towards West India and Kerala can be received and departed from Tambaram.
Bypassing CGL, it could avoid loco reversal.

It was a holiday season. Many had booked tick ets in advance for their journey on January 14 aboard the Suvidha special train from Chennai to Trivandrum. But these passengers were in for a rude shock when hundreds of people got onto the train at intermediate stations; they were travelling ticketless. They occupied all the empty space in the compartment, sat on the aisle, foot of the seats, near the toilets. When the reserved passengers tried to register a complaint, they realised that the train had only one travel ticket examiner (TTE) and he had disembarked mid-way .
Southern Railway sources said other TTEs scheduled to travel on that train bunked work as it was Pongal eve. “They are all members of
Southern Railway Mazdoor Union (SRMU). How can senior officials, whose transfer is decided by SRMU leadership, have the guts to chargesheet such willful acts of disobedience,“ asked a source.
This is not an isolated example of the union's brute show of power. SRMU was able to muster votes to get elected the sole recognised union, but its blatant disregard of rules and regulations has impacted passengers and railway services more often than not. In the long run, it has led to demoralising effect on the bureaucracy , which has to fight harder to counter the unionism-inflicted inefficiency .
SRMU has a presence in all departments, but they wield authority in commercial, maintenance and engineering departments, where the work has a passenger interface.
An RPF source recalled how booking clerks at ticket window at Chennai Central beat up migrants who demanded faster service. Automated ticket vending machines (ATVMs), which help cut queues at counters, are opposed by the union as it will make many jobs redundant. Officials discover that many ATVMs in busy stations are often damaged or the contractual staff absent during peak hours.
A member of SRMU said, “The union gained popularity by stalling transfers and disciplinary action against employees. Though it helped in keeping officials in check in the initial days, it grew unwieldy over the years. This has discouraged employees from working as they are now confident that the union will intervene on their behalf.“
The union is also known for resorting to wildcat strikes, blocking trains, throwing the entire traffic out of gear. A recent example was a strike called by SRMU at the Basin Bridge coaching yard just before the December deluge. Trains arriving at, and departing from Central were blocked for half an hour.
In another incident, two years ago, which could have led to disastrous consequences, a disgruntled union member turned off the entire signalling system at Chennai Central for half an hour. “No signals were working; it could have led to head-on collisions between trains,“ said a railway official.
SRMU vice-president Raja Sridhar declined to comment

This shows the mentality of staff and workers to earn without working.. this could be the reason for SRMU winning union elections continuously.
The suburban stations in Chennai is a classic example where each and every wall of station building is encroached with SRMU banners and posters.
Some years back, it seems that there was a death in one of the trade union leader's office. and there was condolence banners and posters in each and every available space within suburban stations.
union members have time to do all this kind of activities and not working.

Two of Southern Railway's biggest stations, Chennai Central and Egmore, were ranked among the least clean stations across the country by an Indian Railways survey .
One reason for the dismal performance has been railway unions discouraging employees from working. In comparison, bigger stations in Mumbai and Delhi fare better though they face the same constraints faced by Southern Railway, say officials.
The negative impact of this unionism is felt largely at railway workshops and coach yards, where 70% of the workers owing allegiance to SRMU work less than two to three hours.
“This, along with a drop in the quality of work manship, has led to deterioration of coaches,“ said Janakiraman, general secretary of Dakshin Rail ways Employee Union.
Officials of the maintenance department say that a direct impact can be seen in south-bound trains departing from Egmore.Often fans don't work, air-conditioners are not switched even after the train starts and toilets are dity .
As officials could not take action against erring staff, they tried to outsource some of the jobs. That too failed because the contracts could not be executed effectively .
But the administration works hard to negate its effect, said former additional member of railway board Abraham Jacob. “But this has had a debilitating effect on the morale of others,“ he said.
SRMU vice-president Raja Sridhar declined to comment.

Slowly and steadily, coromandel is loosing its charm. Tadepalligudem was added as experimental stopping and now it has become permanent. and next is Eluru. Earlier there were only tree stoppings in AP. And now, it is 5 (up 6). Very soon we can expect another experimental stopping.
But looking into the count of stoppings in Orissa, I think adding stopping to AP is justified.
