JAMMU: The much awaited Udhampur-Katra railway track is likely to be thrown open for passenger traffic after being inaugurated by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in January next year.
“Though no final date has been fixed so far, but the project is likely to be inaugurated in January next year by the Prime Minister,” sources here today told UNI.
said that as a prelude to the final inauguration by the PM, the Railways yesterday conducted the Light Power Engine run from Udhampur to Katra and back.
“The Light Power Engine yesterday left Udhampur for Katra in the morning and reached back in the afternoon along with the Railway officials,” the sources added.
“A proposal has been sent to Delhi seeking five more trains for extension of coverage to Central, Southern, Eastern and Western regions,” said sources, adding that besides, three pairs of DMUs have also been requisitioned for Udhampur-Katra track as are being presently run on Jammu-Udhampur track.
“General Manager Northern Railways D K Gupta shall be on board the Special Train to conduct final test run on the Udhampur-Katra track on Jan 9, 2014 after which Dr Singh shall inaugurate the long-awaited project,” they added.
Around 80 per cent of the route runs through tunnels and bridges and the terrain is so tough that the engineers along with ancillary workers faced lot of geological challenges due to which work got delayed.
“The most difficult challenges faced included a water body found during construction of tunnel number 3 and the collapse of 3-km portion of tunnel number 1 near Udhampur as well as seepage in three other tunnels beyond Katra,” they said.

The construction work however, was brought to halt in 2006 when engineers came across a water body in the middle of the alignment of the 2.4 km long tunnel no. 3 and the design of the tunnel had to be changed.

In 2011 work was once again stopped when tunnel number 1 collapsed and other tunnels also faced seepage problem.
The inauguration of the railway track by the Prime Minster in June this year was postponed after some technical snags along the track were detected. The rail link between Udhampur and Katra was earlier scheduled to be completed by 2005.
The survey on the project was conducted in 1998 but the groundwork started in 1999 setting 2005 as deadline to connect Katra with the rest of the country.
Katra Railway station stands already completed with modern facilities including tourist guide counter, cloak room, waiting hall, VIP lounge, escalators and lifts, besides parking space on either side.

जम्मू। कटड़ा से ट्रेन शुरू करने की तैयारियां जोर-शोर से चल रही हैं। रेल प्रशासन ने कटड़ा से सबसे पहली ट्रेन नई दिल्ली तक चलाए जाने का प्रस्ताव मंजूर किया है। कटड़ा तक ट्रेन जनवरी के पहले सप्ताह से शुरू करने की संभावना है, जबकि दिसंबर महीने के तीसरे सप्ताह में चीफ रेलवे सिक्योरिटी ट्रैक का निरीक्षण करेंगे। इसके बाद तिथि तय करके कटड़ा से ट्रेन को हरी झंडी दी जाएगी।
इस ट्रेन के 18 कोच होंगेे। इसमें दो फर्स्ट एसी, चार सेकेंड एसी, चार थर्ड एसी, दो जनरल और अन्य सामान्य आरक्षित कोच शामिल होंगे। पेंट्री कार भी होगी। ट्रेन शाम पौने पांच बजे रोजाना कटड़ा से नई दिल्ली के लिए रवाना होगी। ट्रेन कटड़ा से होकर उधमपुर, जम्मू तक पहुंचेगी।

जी हां दुनिया भर से माता वैष्णों देवी के दर्शन को आने वाले श्रद्धालुओं के लिए राहत भरी खबर है। दिसंबर में माँ वैष्णो देवी की कृपा अपने भक्तों पर और ज्यादा बरसेगी। अब श्रद्धलु रेल से पहुंचेंगे माँ के दरबार और डेस्टिनेशन होगा माँ वैष्णो देवी कटरा स्टेशन। स्टेशन पर ही श्रद्धालुओं को फोटो युक्त यात्रा पर्ची मिलेगी। ऊधमपुर-कटरा तक डेढ़ किलोमीटर ट्रैक की अलाइनमेंट व पैकिंग का काम पूरा हो चुका है।
ऊधमपुर-कटरा ट्रैक पर दिसंबर के पहले सप्ताह में इंजन ट्रायल कर लिया जाएगा। सभी भक्‍तों के लिये महत्‍वपूर्ण इस ट्रेन को हरी झंडी प्रधानमंत्री मनमोहन सिंह दिखायेंगे। इस रेल सेवा के शुरू होने के साथ-साथ अगले महीने से श्रद्धालु ट्रेन से सीधे मां की नगरी कटरा पहुंच सकेंगे। दिसंबर के दूसरे पखवाड़े में कटरा के लिए ट्रेन शुरू होने की पूरी संभावना है।
रेलवे विभाग युद्ध स्तर पर कटरा के अत्याधुनिक रेलवे स्टेशन सहित कटरा-ऊधमपुर रेल मार्ग को अंतिम रूप देने में जुट गया है।
कटरा का अत्याधुनिक रेलवे स्टेशन श्री माता वैष्णो देवी कटरा यानी एसएमवीके के नाम से जाना जाएगा। इसको लेकर रेलवे विभाग द्वारा औपचारिकताएं पूरी कर ली गई हैं।
23 किमी लम्बे कटड़ा-ऊधमपुर रेलवे मार्ग पर दिसंबर के पहले सप्ताह में इंजन ट्रायल पूरा कर लिया जाएगा। दूसरे पखवाड़े में प्रधानमंत्री मनमोहन सिंह कटरा के लिए रेल को हरी झंडी दिखाएंगे। इसके साथ ही यह अत्याधुनिक रेलवे स्टेशन देश के अन्य हिस्सों से जुड़ जाएगा।
रेलवे मार्ग पर 11 किलोमीटर लंबी टनल भी पड़ेगी। यानी आपकी यात्रा और भी ज्‍यादा रोमांचक होने वाली है। अगर देश की सबसे लंबी रेलवे टनल की बात करें तो उसकी लंबाई 15 किलोमीटर है। इसके अलावा नौ बड़े और 29 छोटे पुल बनाए गए हैं, जो एक पहाड़ से दूसरे पहाड़ तक ट्रेन को लेकर जायेंगे। इनमें सबसे ऊंचा 85 मीटर का पुल है, गौरतलब है कि वर्तमान में मां वैष्णो देवी जी के दर्शनों को आने वाले श्रद्धालुओं को जम्मू के बाद बस या टैक्सियों में 45 किमी सफर तय कर कटरा पहुंचना पड़ता है। रेलवे के प्रवक्ता नीरज गुप्ता के अनुसार बहुत जल्‍द इस रेलयात्रा के लिये बुकिंग शुरू कर दी जायेगी।

The long wait is coming to a close. Hopefully by the third week of December, rail link between Udhampur and the holy town of Katra will be established, and with it, pilgrims to the shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi from any part of the country will reach the town by direct rail connectivity. Katra, the base town for ascent to the Trikuta Hills for the pilgrimage to the shrine is poised to develop into a very vibrating and prosperous town in days to come.
Rail connectivity of this 23-kilometer long distance could not meet earlier date lines. That had caused some disappointment to the people. But actually they could not imagine the stupendous task that lay before the Construction Division. Imagine the
23-kilometer long railway track has 11 kilometres of tunnelling, 9 major bridges, 29 minor bridges, 10 railway over/under bridges with tallest bridge 85 meters tall and longest tunnel is 3.15 kilometres. It is indeed a feat of engineering and the engineers, workers and labourers who worked on this track and brought it to completion deserve to be showered with praises.
The fact of the matter is that the entire rail connectivity project for the State of Jammu and Kashmir is a unique enterprise that demanded highest proficiency and expertise. Fortunately our engineers, geologists, builders and related services were available indigenously. Konkan Railway had provided good experience to the railway engineers of how to bring rail line to a mountainous region like Kashmir. The rail link to Kashmir valley is one of the biggest achievements of post-independent India. For millennia this hilly tract of Jammu as well as the valley of Kashmir remained isolated from the rest of the world owing to inaccessibility and other physical conditions. The people of the region remained steeped in abject poverty. They had no avenues to improve their lives. The railway line from Jammu to Srinagar is passing through desolate areas and mountains of forbidding environs. But as we know, human ingenuity is such that it can convert deserts into lush green fields. Constructing the rail line through the historical Pir Panchal ranges is bound to change everything in these remote and rather inhospitable areas of the State. It will infuse new blood in the economic veins of the State. It will usher in an era of prosperity and modernity. With the coming of railway there will follow education, healthcare, tourism, trade and other services? People will find variegated avenues for progress and development. It will contribute to the cohesion of the entire people and they will wriggle out of a debilitating syndrome of isolationism.
Udhampur-Katra track is likely to be formally opened by the third week of December. Authorities think that in next two weeks the remaining work could be completed and hopefully the Prime Minister would be able to flag off the first passenger train to Katra around 17th of December. The heartening information is that the State authorities are reported to be fully alive to the huge rush of pilgrims at the final destination in Katra. The Katra railway Station has been given the alphabetical code name of SMVK which stands for Shri Mata Vaishnodevi-Katra. Taking into account the huge number of pilgrims who would be visiting the holy shrine and landing at Katra railway station, authorities of Reasi district have moved swiftly to acquire about 500 kanals of land for building a modern bus stand away from the proximities of the railway station to avoid crowding of the station. But this is not enough. Latest figure of pilgrims known to us is around 1.10 crore during last year. It will go up with the opening of the new rail link. Therefore the Government, the Shrine Board and Railway authorities should join to discuss the future planning of the peripheral location of the railway station and plan for shops, eateries, rest houses, saris, roads, parks, parking slots, health centres/first aid facilities and transportation arrangements for millions of pilgrims. It is a huge task and the three entities shall have to sit down an address the requirements.
Inauguration of the new link should be an occasion of rejoicing for the entire population of Jammu region. It should also be an occasion of felicitating our celebrated engineers, technicians and workers for a historical achievement that is bound to change the frozen destiny of a large chunk of population living in these remote heights of Trikuta Hills and the Pir Panchal. The rail link to Katra is a happy signal of economic prosperity to the entire State. We congratulate the Central and the State Government for glory and success in a major nation- building enterprise-the rail link to Shri Mata Vaishnodevi Shrine.

Not aware of local trains but two express trains to Katra are put up in this budget one is Delhi Katra AC Exp and Kalka Katra Exp but more important train according to me is Uttar SK Exp.

Jammu : Seven years have passed since its approval but the ‘Jammu Tawi Railway Station Modernization project’ is yet to see the light of the day as the Central Railway Board (CRB) is sitting on the Detailed Project Report (DPR) submitted for approval a year ago . As per reliable sources, Jammu Tawi railway station modernization plan is awaiting approval of Central Railway Board (CRB) as it has so far not given its nod to the Detailed Project Report (DPR) sent by Divisional office Jammu. It also recommends installation of escalator from the parking lot to the overhead southern bridge and utilization of vacant land near railway station. Despite catering to over 50,000 passengers daily, the Jammu railway station lacks even basic facilities with shabby conditions inside and around. The passengers face immense problems in absence adequate provision for hygienic food, drinking water, toilets and sitting arrangement. When contacted, R.N Meena, Divisional Traffic Manager, Jammu said, up gradation and modernization of Jammu Tawi Railway Station, to make it a state of the art railway terminus of the country is in process. He added that the blue print   has been prepared by Divisional Office and submitted to Central Railway Board for approval and funds allocations by the Railway Ministry. However he said that the implementation of the project would be started after the approval of DPR by the Central railway Board.
