The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has sent the Railways Ministry into a tizzy over an idea it received from an 81-year-old resident of Gujarat — that windmills be installed along railway tracks to produce electricity, utilising the wind generated by fast moving trains.
Vipin Trivedi of Ahmedabad, a former employee of Bank of Baroda’s Agriculture and Rural Development wing who retired in 1991, sent the idea by post to the PMO. The PMO, in turn, forwarded it to the Railways Ministry, asking it to explore the “techno-economic” feasibility of the idea, and sought regular updates.
the idea came from the PMO, Rail Bhawan officials started serious communication with Trivedi, but also politely told him that it did not sound doable. As per documents accessed by The Indian Express, Railways said Trivedi could be called in the future to give more technical details about his idea.
Trivedi is waiting.
“One day, I was travelling by train and the idea just struck me. So I discussed it with my gurubhai (disciples of a godman) who knew a man who had worked closely with Narendrabhai (Modi) in overhauling Gujarat’s power sector. That man is now posted as the Additional Principal Secretary to the PM in Delhi. So I sent the idea to him by post,” Trivedi told The Indian Express from the Nandigram Ashram in Bharuch last week, where he was attending a course on “spiritual wellbeing”. “If they call me to Delhi, they should be willing to seriously discuss the idea,” he said.
Although nobody in the ministry was convinced about Trivedi’s idea, top Rail Bhawan officials have been applying their time and energy, keeping the Chairman, Railway Board, informed as well.
“A train will pass the windmill in less than 20 seconds. Even if there is a train every 15 minutes, a windmill can operate for only 25 minutes per day. This will not be viable economically. Further, the energy produced by the windmills would have to come from the trains only, which will consume extra energy,” said a mail Trivedi received from the ministry on September 1.
The email exchange has been regular. Another email sent a few days before that said, “We will, however, like to have some more technical details with regard to your suggestion, which may be sent to us for further detailed examination.”
Rail Bhawan officials told The Indian Express that the idea was not workable and they would communicate this to the PMO. “There is nothing wrong with anyone in the country coming up with any new idea. It is our job to take them seriously and see if they can be executed,” said a senior ministry official.
When contacted, Prof Anil Gupta of IIM Ahmedabad, an expert in alternative sources of energy, told The Indian Express, “This is not a practicable idea. Especially with Railways, it will not work at all because of the frequency of trains and the cost of the windmill, the transmission and distribution of power would all work against it. The amount of power generated would also be unfeasible.”

Instead of this, small windmills can be installed on the coaches and the generated power can be utilised for the coaches. The additional energy if generated can be transmitted to the engine. so that the fuel consumption can be decreased. I heard about this project from engineering students in the newspaper..

JAMMU, June 23: Prime Minister Narendra Modi would finally inaugurate train to Katra, the base camp of Mata Vaishno Devi ji shrine, on July 3.
The date for inauguration of 25 kilometers Udhampur-Katra railway line, constructed at a cost of Rs 1050 crores approximately, was decided when Railways Minister Sadanand Gowda called on Modi at the Prime Minister’s Officer (PMO) today.
Official sources told the Excelsior that Modi, Gowda and MoS in PMO Dr Jitendra Singh would inaugurate train service to Katra, which would take thousands of pilgrims visiting holy cave shrine of
Mata Vaishno Devi ji daily to the base camp directly.
Sources said Modi would also visit the cave shrine the same day and offer prayers to Goddess Vaishno Devi ji. Modi had visited the shrine on March 26 and offered prayers to the Goddess before launching party’s election campaign and led the BJP to majority on its own. After visiting Vaishno Devi ji, Modi had addressed first election rally at border town of Hiranagar, a seat BJP won comprehensively defeating Union Minister and former Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad.
Railways authorities have declared Udhampur-Katra railway line as complete and ready for inauguration.

Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel has demanded more trains between Mangalore and Bangalore via Hassan.He also sought a separate Railway Division for Mangalore in a memorandum submitted to Railway Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda ahead of the rail budget.Mr. Kateel pointed out that an agreement signed with Hassan-Mangalore Railway Development Company Ltd (HMRDC), was an impediment in the introduction of new passenger trains on the route.
The company, looking to regain its investments, allowed only goods trains on the line and considered that the passenger train services would hamper the movement of the goods rakes. Being a service provider, it should introduce more passenger trains, he said.
Kateel cited the example of operating many trains between Bangalore and Hubli via Arasikere.
Though there was no direct link (that passes through Chitradurga, the regular bus route), he demanded two more trains should be introduced from Bangalore to Mangalore via Arasikere or Hassan.
“One direct train at night between Mangalore to Bangalore is not enough,” he said.
He also said if the travel time, currently between 11 and 12 hours, was reduced, it would benefit people.
This could be possible by expediting the Shravanabelagola-Nelamangala new line work.
‘More trains’
Mr. Kateel also demanded more trains from Hubli, Gulbarga to Mangalore via Hassan and Arasikere “which is possible with the current railway track.”
The other demands he made were: permanent halt of all Kerala-bound trains at major stations like Surathkal, Udupi, Kundapura, Byndoor, Bhatkal, Kumta and Karwar, improvement of passenger amenities at these stations, doubling the track of the Mangalore Central-Ullal stretch, super-fast trains to Mumbai and New Delhi, making Mangalore Central a world class station, reduction in travel time and increase in the frequency of Bangalore-Karwar train, wider approach road to Mangalore Junction station, replacing Malayalam sign boards with Kannada boards.
Separate division
On the separate division for Mangalore, he said it should be brought under South Western Railway Zone headquartered in Hubli. “Mangalore is the second biggest city of Karnataka and a commercial and industrial centre…(and) an important tourist place and attracts pilgrims.”
Mangalore Zone generated revenue from goods transportation to and fro Bangalore, Mysore, Hubli and other parts of Karnataka, he said adding Mangalore railway stations had received step-motherly treatment under Palakkad Division.

I think this was the quite ok decision. Vijaywada as Zonal Office. It will be in the center of the whole zone. I wished Guntur should have been the zonal office headquarter. Because we had abundant amount of space is available for development.

Seeks direct train between Hubli, Mangalore
The Hubli-based Indian Travellers’ Association has urged the Minister of Railways D.V. Sadananda Gowda to fulfil the long pending railway demands from Karnataka.In a letter to the Minister released to the media, the spokesman of the association, Uttam O. Satiya, pointed out that after gauge conversion, the rail link between Mangalore and Hubli had got disconnected.The association requested that the Minister initiate the process of creating Mangalore railway division and bring it under the Hubli-headquartered South Western Railway Zone. The letter also mentioned Hubli-Ankola railway line, and urged the Minister to take requisite steps to take the project forward.The association pressed the Minister to introduce a daily overnight train from Mangalore to Hubli via Hassan, Arsikere
or via Udupi-Margoa.
Mr. Uttam pointed out that the Old Bangalore-Hubli-Mumbai Chalukya Express was extended to Tirunalveli/ Pondicherry three years ago, reducing the quota of seats available to passengers from Hubli to just 10 per cent. He urged the Railway Minister to restart the earlier service.

You people are only talking about Konkan Line from Hubli onwards. Have you forgot that the Belgaum is also part of Karnataka or till hubli the karnataka state ends. I demand earlier Mahalaxmi Express Daily from Miraj to Mangalore via Hubli, and Bangalore to Mumbai Express Daily via Hubli. Konkan has lot of connectivity to Mumbai and Beyond and also to southern side. Also Poona-Earnakulam Poorna Express train from Weekly to daily or atleast tri-weekly.

Before Gauge Conversion, there was a daily train from Mangalore to Miraj Mahalaxmi Express. This was a connection train to Kolhapur to Mumbai Mahalaxmi Express. After Gauge Conversion this train was not restarted. Like this, Vasco-Miraj Express which was connecting train to Kolhapur-Mumbai Sahyadri Express was also not restated.

Task of augmenting railway track density in Karnataka needs a big push as major routes are saturated with line capacity utilisation in excess of 100 per cent along many stretches.
Line capacity refers to the number of trains that can be run on a section in a given period. Enhancing railway line capacity calls for massive investment over the next few years.
Hence, stakeholders say the appointment of D.V. Sadananda Gowda as Railway Minister has ushered in a ray of hope for the State.
utilisation is 105 per cent on the Tumkur–Ariskere section, 120 per cent on the Birur–Chikjajur section, 105 per cent between Chikjajur–Harihar, 106 per cent between Harihar–Hubli, 119 per cent between Birur–Shimoga and 135 per cent between Hassan–Arsikere, to cite a few examples.
Karnataka also fares poorly with regard to route length and track density when compared to other States. Sources in South Western Railways told The Hindu that Karnataka had a track length of nearly 3,073 km till the end of 2010–11 as against 5,264 km in Andhra Pradesh, 4,062 km in Tamil Nadu, 5,602 in Maharashtra, 4,955 km in Madhya Pradesh, 5,271 km in Gujarat and 5,784 km in Rajasthan. But the route could be enhanced if some of the pending projects are expedited.
Some examples are the Mysore–Madikeri railway line, track-doubling work between Bangalore and Mysore, new railway line between Bangalore and Chamarajanagar via Malavalli, and completion of the Chikmagalur–Sakleshpur stretch. The preliminary engineering-cum- traffic survey for the Mysore–Madikeri route was completed in May 2012 and the cost of completing the first phase of the project was pegged at Rs. 600 crore, but the project has been put on the back burner.
Sources said there were 12 new projects adding up to nearly 750 km and 13 track-doubling projects approved for Karnataka, but progress was slow.
The total cost was pegged around Rs. 15,369 crore of which Rs. 12,228 crore would be met by Railways and State had to chip in with Rs. 3,141 crore.

मुंबई ते करमाळी धावणाऱ्या
शताब्दीचा क्रमांक ०२११३ असून परतीचा प्रवास करणाऱ्या ट्रेनचा क्रमांक ०२११४ असेल. पहिली ट्रेन रविवारी सीएसटी स्थानकावरून सायंकाळी साडेपाच वाजता सुटेल. जनशताब्दीच्या तुलनेत या ट्रेनमध्ये उत्तम सुविधा असल्यामुळे तिकिटाचे दरही जास्त असतील. दादर, ठाणे, पनवेल, रोहा, चिपळूण, रत्नागिरी असे थांबे घेत ही ट्रेन करमाळीस पोहोचेल. मांडवी आणि कोकणकन्या या १२ तासात गोव्याला पोहोचणाऱ्या ट्रेनच्या तुलनेत ताशी ७० किमी वेगाने धावणारी आणि अवघ्या साडेआठ तासात पोहोचणारी शताब्दी हा प्रवाशांना उपलब्ध असलेला जलद पर्याय आहे.
कोकण रेल्वेच्या मार्गाने गोव्याच्या दिशेने धावणाऱ्या सर्व ट्रेनमध्ये डिसेंबरपासून जानेवारीच्या दुसऱ्या आठवड्यापर्यंत प्रचंड मोठी प्रतीक्षा यादी असते. त्यामुळे रिझर्व्ह तिकीट मिळवण्यासाठी प्रवाशांना शताब्दीचा पर्याय उपलब्ध करून दिल्याचे मध्य रेल्वेचे मुख्य जनसंपर्क अधिकारी अतुल राणे यांनी सांगितले. सध्या प्रायोगिक तत्त्वावर धावणारी ही ट्रेन पुढील वर्षी अधिक काळासाठी उपलब्ध होऊ शकते.
