Q. How much time do you expect an Express train to take for covering a distance of 65 km on an electrified BG double line, with three stoppages in between?
A. 100 minutes, if you're travelling from QLN to TVC or vice versa by 16342/16341!!

Controllers of SR/TVC having a filed day today; almost all up trains are running late.
A sample of their efficency: 66301 ERS QLN MEMU was held @ KRPP for 20 minutes for a twin light loco to pass; this train could've easily reached ETM for this crossing.
66301 held again @KTYM for twin crossings: 12515 & a goods train.
Imagine the urgency behind
...
sending a goods train in between many express trains, that too on a day when thousands of pilgrims are returning home after Makaravilakku @ Sabarimala. Thanks to this superior decision added to heavy rush from CNGR, 16525, 12082, QLN MAS Suvidha, 12624 etc are all running late.
To make a long story short, 66301 eventually reached QLN @ 1950, after getting overtaken by 16605 at PRND. As per railway records, it was just an hour late(actually it was 90 minutes late @ PRND; so think about the slack!).
(PS: I do accept that you pay nominal fare in passenger trains; but does it mean the train shouldn't be allowed to run to its approved time table?!)

I have never understood the basis on which controllers take decision on day to day basis. Also quite sure that these decisions are also thrust upon them instead of taking them independently.
Is there some set of rules/priority lists on the basis of which they prioritise ?

Priority is set by the Operations manual and important aspects are incorporated in Working Time Table(WTT) circulated to operation staff. AFAIK, Goods are not supposed to get priority over any kind of passenger trains; but in reality they accord priority to goods, especially oil tankers etc to ensure their arrival ON TIME, which fetches railways some incentive or additional charges.

Commercial interests!!
Actually its TT was once revised so as to bypass ERS & run via ERN without loco change. But there was huge protest & authorities reinstated its service via ERS. Worse, the train used to stop both @ ERS & ERN during those few days!
Interestingly, this is the sole loco change for this train running which runs 3033 km one way.

Not sole loco change. 12625 undergoes loco change at Erode as well
For 12626, it is the only loco change

True that they give a fresh(POHed) loco which can take the train to NDLS & back to ERS.
What I meant was the train doesn't undergo any loco change to reverse direction during its entire journey, apart from ERS.

Correct. Both Venad express and Kerala express can almost reduce their running time by almost 45-1hour minutes if they skip ERS.
As of now in case of Venad express, from the time it arrives in ERN and then departure from ERS after loco reversal close to 1 hour 10 minutes is wasted. In case of Kerala express, from Aluva to ERS 1 hour running time is given to cover just 20km. If it would have gone from ERN itself, the train can easily reduce running time by almost an hour !!

SR/TVC should be busy trying to block and sabotage all attempts by other divisions/zones to operate new trains to their jurisdiction!
The request to bifurcate Amrita & Rajya Rani is a long pending one; TVC refuses it citing lack of pitlines.
Same will be the response to the proposed MAQ - NCJ Super Deluxe Express, unless MAQ owns up responsibility for its maintenance.

Suresh MP wants a new train from PUU to ERS, ahead of Venad Express. As usual, Operations wing of TVC came up with a reverse time table(ERS dep @ 0410 & PUU arr @ 0935). As MP tried to get it reversed, TVC informed that the new train cannot be operated to ERS, but to PGT. Heard PGT has not accepted this proposal as it will adversely affect their regular line blocks.

Today in Malayalam Manorama there was a news that the new train from Punalur to Palakkad will start in the first week of January. It will have an early departure from Punalur somewhere around 4am, reaching PGT around 1:30pm/2. It will then depart from PGT at 4pm, having a very odd time of arrival after midnight at Punalur. Seems it will got to SRR and will have loco reversal.

Why aren't they proposing restoration of all services which were in operation during MG days?
PUU - SCT GC too is nearing completion & new BG track is expected to be ready for operation by May. Hope they will restore all Express/Passenger services which operated prior to line closure for GC.
Heard RM has promised a Humsafar for Kerala at the function in TVC today; hope it turns out to be a triweekly TVC - MAQ/MAJN SF/SD Express.

Dec 21 2016 (14:59)   Rail users seek Jan Shatabdi from Nagercoil to Coimbatore

Jayashree ❖ Amita*^   35121 news posts
Entry# 2098718   News Entry# 289295         Tags   Past Edits
MADURAI: Rail users in the region appealed to the railway ministry to operate a Jan Shatabdi Express train to Coimbatore - the industrial hub of Western Tamil Nadu - from Southern districts as the train connectivity from the region to Coimbatore is minimum. A day time train is the need of the hour to cater to the huge passenger traffic to Coimbatore, they say.
At present, a day time passenger train from Nagercoil to Coimbatore takes more than 13 hours to cross the 533 kilometres, while the night time train from Nagercoil to Coimbatore, which has link express attached from Tuticorin, take 10.55 hours. There are couple of more trains from Nagercoil to Coimbatore but they are operated through Kerala via Ernakulam
...

and Palakkad.
Indian Railways operate Jan Shatabdi trains between important cities. When compared to fully air-conditioned Shatabdi trains, Jan Shatabdi trains are affordable with both air-conditioned and non-airconditioned chair car coaches. There are 20 such trains in Indian Railways and two of them are in Tamil Nadu, namely 12077/12078 Chennai Central - Vijayawada and 12083/12084 Mayiladuthurai - Coimbatore Jan Shatabdi Express trains.
Kanyakumari District Rail Users Association (KKDRUA) has appealed to the railway ministry to come out with a Jan Shatabdi Express from Nagercoil to Coimbatore via Madurai - Dindigul - Pollachi. Day time train operation is skeletal in the region and newly converted Palani - Pollachi section is very much underutilised, the association said. A small section of gauge conversion works between Pollachi - Podanur is underway and likely to be completed by mid-2017, according to railway statements.
"A Jan Shatabdi could be announced in the next budget and could be operated very well from the next railway calendar usually rolled out in October. A Jan Shatabdi kind of train that can negotiate distance with speed and at affordable fare will be of great help to people in the region" said P Edward Jeni, secretary of KKDRUA.
"We have travelled as family in Mayiladuthurai - Coimbatore Jan Shatabdi between Mayiladuthurai and Trichy. The journey was pleasant and we reached our destination on time. It will be great to have one Jan Shatabdi from south to place like Coimbatore," said S Vijayaraghavan from Madurai.
In need of western connection
As Pollachi - Podanur gauge conversion works are to be completed by the middle of 2017, a day time Jan Shatabdi could be operated through Pollachi section from the next railway calendar time table

AFAIK, the last batch of JanSatabdi coaches were manufactured in 2010. So where do you get rakes to introduce new JS?
This indeed is the irony of trains operated/launched with specialized coaches like JanSatabdi/Duronto/Garibrath. Chances exist that similar plight awaits recent launches including HumSafar, Antyodaya, Deen Dayalu etc!

Technically, is it fair to charge the higher ticket rates applicable for Jan Satabdi trains, if operated with normal LHB/ICF coaches? For example, ERS - ALLP - QLN Jan Chair car fare is Rs. 105/-. For normal express, ticket fare from ERS to QLN via ALLP is Rs. 75(including reservation charge). For SF train, this will go upto Rs. 90/-, which is lesser than JS fare. So JS indeed is charging a premium on ticket fare over & above SF rates.
Hence, presume JS charges a premium not only for faster run, but for better, improved seats as well.
Personally,

Despite passage of a century of train operations & subsequent GC, Railways stick to the old name for 'Edamon' railway station on QLN - SCT route.
Central & State Government offices like Post office, Village office etc use the place name as 'Idamon'(ഇടമൺ in Malayalam); but railways insist on retaining എടമൻ!!
