Feb 18 2017 (22:04)   16312/Kochuveli - Bikaner Express (PT) | KCVL/Kochuveli (4 PFs)

Finally 16312 KCVL BKN Express has began its regular service with LHB Coaches, just 5 hour 25 minutes behind schedule. True that passengers travelling by it today can feel excited about the new LHB rake; but being made to wait for over 5 hours for such a treat is just pathetic. Wish SR planned the transition to LHB rake better & arranged to bring it atleast 24 hours before scheduled departure. Or atleast ensured that the train departs @ its normal time, with or without LHB rake.
Adding insult to injury, SR/TVC has come up with some flimsy excuse like 'technical problems faced in the ICF made LHB rake' led to the delay. Shortly after announcing the schedule of special

train bringing in the LHB rake, DRM/TVC tweeted that 16312 of 18.02.2017 is rescheduled to leave @ 1800h. So when did the real 'technical issue' crop up?
In last few weeks, so many trains all over the country got converted to LHB; wonder how many of them faced similar delayed starts due to 'technical problems'!
Honestly, you just give anything to SR/TVC; they'll mess it up & come up with such lousy reasoning!!
P S: SR/TVC is operating a weekly special train to GHY from KCVL. AFAIK, it hasn't left KCVL on the nominated day(Sunday 1200) for the past many trips & usually leaves on Monday @ 1200(minimum 24 hours late). Also, it is practically impossible to make up this delay, when the service is operated with a single, scrap rake.
Still week after week SR/TVC faithfully announces that KCVL - GHY Special is late & will leave only on Monday. Frankly, why can't you just revise the schedule of this Special train to Monday?!!

No maintenance @ KCVL before inaugural run; had read that the rake is coming with BPC for entire journey, which is MAS - KCVL - BKN. The same instruction had directed to ensure filling of diesel in generator cars & providing services of a technical staff for KCVL - BKN - KCVL trip.

They have started manufacturing Jan ChairCars again; spotted two new coaches (# SR WGSCZJ 16616 & 16617) in 12076/75 TVC CLT TVC JanSatabdi Express today. Coaches have bio-toilets & has only 103 seats, in comparison to older coaches having capacity of 106.
Really glad to note that Jan Chaircars are back in production; still wonder why the reduction in number of seats.

Remaining portion of ERS - KTYM - KYJ doubling project gets confined to one district: Kottayam. Works on the 36 km stretch from KRPP to CGV is progressing at snail's pace. Rs. 150 crore has been earmarked for this project in FY 2017 - 18. The remaining section is expected to get doubled in another 18 months; if it will actually happen is anybody's guess.

Deeply upset with the late running of 16302 TVC SRR Venad Express day after day, regular commuters blocked it @ KTYM today morning. More details: click here
Frankly, SR/TVC seems to be having the worst lot of controllers now. Most of their actions defy logic.
Today morning 12777 UBL - KCVL SF Express, which was running late, but comfortably ahead of 16315 SBC KCVL Express was detained @ KZK, the station just before its destination. 12777 was held for good 15 minutes to let 16315 overtake, which also ends up its journey

@ KCVL. Incidentally both PFs @ KCVL was empty as LTT Garibrath had already left at 0850.
Interestingly, 12777 has PF turnaround & returns to UBL @ 1250 whereas 16315 has PM @ KCVL & departs at 1645. Also, the loco of 12777(#offlink ET WAP 4 22927) was detached first & dispatched to TVC!
On Tuesday, the rake of 16342 TVC GUV Intercity scheduled to depart @ 1730 was placed on PF 3 at TVC only by 1720. Without any announcement, 16304 TVC ERS Vanchinad (dep: 1745) was allowed to leave ahead of Intercity. Incidentally, 16341 has first stoppage @ VAK, whereas Vanchinad halts @ KZK, CRY & KVU before stopping again @ VAK. In short, a train with more halts was leading the one with fewer stoppages!!

Q. How much time do you expect an Express train to take for covering a distance of 65 km on an electrified BG double line, with three stoppages in between?
A. 100 minutes, if you're travelling from QLN to TVC or vice versa by 16342/16341!!

Controllers of SR/TVC having a filed day today; almost all up trains are running late.
A sample of their efficency: 66301 ERS QLN MEMU was held @ KRPP for 20 minutes for a twin light loco to pass; this train could've easily reached ETM for this crossing.
66301 held again @KTYM for twin crossings: 12515 & a goods train.
Imagine the urgency behind

sending a goods train in between many express trains, that too on a day when thousands of pilgrims are returning home after Makaravilakku @ Sabarimala. Thanks to this superior decision added to heavy rush from CNGR, 16525, 12082, QLN MAS Suvidha, 12624 etc are all running late.
To make a long story short, 66301 eventually reached QLN @ 1950, after getting overtaken by 16605 at PRND. As per railway records, it was just an hour late(actually it was 90 minutes late @ PRND; so think about the slack!).
(PS: I do accept that you pay nominal fare in passenger trains; but does it mean the train shouldn't be allowed to run to its approved time table?!)

I have never understood the basis on which controllers take decision on day to day basis. Also quite sure that these decisions are also thrust upon them instead of taking them independently.
Is there some set of rules/priority lists on the basis of which they prioritise ?

Priority is set by the Operations manual and important aspects are incorporated in Working Time Table(WTT) circulated to operation staff. AFAIK, Goods are not supposed to get priority over any kind of passenger trains; but in reality they accord priority to goods, especially oil tankers etc to ensure their arrival ON TIME, which fetches railways some incentive or additional charges.

Commercial interests!!
Actually its TT was once revised so as to bypass ERS & run via ERN without loco change. But there was huge protest & authorities reinstated its service via ERS. Worse, the train used to stop both @ ERS & ERN during those few days!
Interestingly, this is the sole loco change for this train running which runs 3033 km one way.

Not sole loco change. 12625 undergoes loco change at Erode as well
For 12626, it is the only loco change

True that they give a fresh(POHed) loco which can take the train to NDLS & back to ERS.
What I meant was the train doesn't undergo any loco change to reverse direction during its entire journey, apart from ERS.

Correct. Both Venad express and Kerala express can almost reduce their running time by almost 45-1hour minutes if they skip ERS.
As of now in case of Venad express, from the time it arrives in ERN and then departure from ERS after loco reversal close to 1 hour 10 minutes is wasted. In case of Kerala express, from Aluva to ERS 1 hour running time is given to cover just 20km. If it would have gone from ERN itself, the train can easily reduce running time by almost an hour !!
