The trains will be notified in the new timetable on October 1 but their starting date will be announced later, railway sources said.

.
Humsafar Express is an all-3AC coach train for inter-city overnight journey which will have additional facilities, not available in normal 3AC coaches, like CCTV, GPS-based information system, fire and smoke detection system and charging points for every berth. With improved aesthetics inside coaches, fare for this train will be 20% pricer than the normal express and mail trains, officials said. Railway minister Suresh Prabhu has envisioned that the train will run at speeds greater than 130 kmph.

Oct 01 2014 (07:43)   Brindavan Exp chugs past 50th year

On October 1, 1964, history was created when the Southern Railway introducted the first day-time intercity express between Chennai (then Madras) and Bangalore.Named Brindavan Express after the famous Brindavan Gardens in Mysore, the train, which was first introduced on an experimental basis, turned out to be the ideal choice for tourists.
Initially, the train started with eight conventional coaches hauled by a steam locomotive. It covered the 360km distance between Madras and Bangalore in 7.5 hours. In 1966, the train was run with diesel locos and the running time was reduced to 5.5 hours. The stops were limited to three stations -Katpadi, Jolarpettai and Bangalore Cantonment. Later, the train's running time shrank to five hours. Emboldened by passengers' response, the railways provided a

complete vestibule rake with lightweight coaches and a fully reserved accommodation.
It was known for its punctuality and it is believed that travellers waiting at Madras Central station could set their watch at 7.45pm upon the arrival of Brindavan Express. “That green-yellow livery was a wonder to behold -whether you were seeing the train zoom past or you were sitting in the compartment seeing the stations pass by . There was no question of even a single unreserved passenger on board this train till the mid-1980s,“ said Sriram Karthik, another rail enthusiast.
“I have wonderful memories of travelling by it since the 1960s. Since I was a frequent traveler, Brindavan Express was my preferred train because of its promptness,“ said T Sangeetha Rao, an artist.
As Brindavan Express completes its golden jubilee and rolls into another year, rail users from Chennai and Bangalore sincerely hope the Indian Railways, which has over the years given the train a raw deal by increasing stoppages and travel time, restores this train to its original glory

Thanks to ECONOMICS TIMES:
FESTIVAL RUSH - Special trains cannot cope with demand
Chennai
TIMES NEWS NETWORK

...

It's the same story when every festival nears. The railways cannot operate enough additional trains to meet the de mand, making people heading home desperate to the point of be ing reckless.
The demand for seats is so high that special trains intro duced for Onam festival were sold out soon after bookings opened. Regular services are al ways sold out when booking opens for Diwali, Onam, Christmas and New Year.
Tickets were sold out for scheduled services between Chennai and Tirunelveli, Tutico rin, Madurai, Trichy , Coimba tore and a few other towns less than 10 minutes after bookings opened two days ago.
Southern Railway introduces special trains close to festival dates to meet the demand. How ever, four or five special trains for each festival always proves inade quate. The railways has failed to make the most of higher demand though the phenomenon has per sisted for years.
“It has become a routine for tickets to be sold out for regular trains on festival eve but the railways has not taken steps to meet the demand. People who do not get berths are forced to travel by private buses and operators hike prices when the demand is high,“ said G Murali, a regular traveler.
Officials say shortage of coaches and congested tracks limit the number of special trains they can operate.
Southern Railway operated 584 special trains in the first three months and more than 1,600 coaches were attached to regular trains on a day-to-day ba sis for waitlisted passengers. But this was not enough because the number of passengers has grown over the years and the railways has not improved infrastructure to operate more trains.
“We do not have enough pit lines to maintain trains at rail way yards and doubling of lines is progressing at snail's pace on southern routes where the de mand is greatest,“ said a senior railway official, adding that they will now have to introduce spe cial trains or add coaches to regu lar trains to accommodate people on the waiting list.
