decision on the Karwar Express has left many disappointed. Regular passengers on the train point  that it runs via Mysuru city presently and takes 12 hours to cover the distance to Mangaluru.  " It stops in Mysuru for an hour and runs very slow in the Shiradi ghat section. But if the train is diverted on the Bengaluru-Hassan direct line, it could save three to four hours. However, despite repeated letters to the SWR , it is  not ready to fulfill this demand," complained Mr. Gurunath Shenoy, a regular passenger on the route, arguing that if  the travel time between Mangaluru and Bengaluru was cut,  it would also help passengers from Udupi, Kundapur and Bhatkal.
He believes the luxury bus lobby is putting a spoke in the wheels as it could lose business if there was a more comfortable train between Bengaluru and Mangaluru.   
"Presently around 400 luxury private buses  operate between the two cities every day and so this lobby is stopping the SWR from using the new track for the Karwar Express," he charged.

It's really sad that even after knowing the popularity of the sbc-maq night train. The SWR have not bothered to either introduce a new train or atleast run the existing train on this new route. It clearly shows the Nexus between SWR and the bus lobby. I have written emails to the minister and raised multiple greivance in the railway portal but haven't received any proper response.

Yes u are right alternative alignment of HAS MAJN section was there but the old MG route was hurriedly made BG. The alignment of this route was proposed from Kabakaputtur to Sakhleshpur without touching SBHR. But SBHR temple is a sacred place, hence plan was dropped. Bus lobby played important role in forcing SWR to follow MG alignment for BG route while another alignment survey from SBHR to MYS directly bye passing HAS didn't see the daylight on it. Alternative MAJN HAS route byepassing Shiradi Ghats is a must

2 hour journey reduction for a 11:45hrs journey is an appreciable reduction. Reporters always try to exaggerate the fact.
The fact which is worth giving thought is, just to fulfil wish/vested-interest of a person to quickly complete the GC in his tenure, the work was done hazardly, bypassing the norms and are people are paying the price of lack of professionalism to the working of IR and continue to do so.

would have been better if GC was completed with adoption of BG standards even if delayed by a few years. Had the norms been followed during GC, the journey would have been extremely convenient and less than 8 hours long as compared to 12 hrs today and capacity & traffic carried by this route too would have been much higher than what is at present. We would have seen atleast 3 overnight trains on the SBC-MAQ-MAO/ERS route which could have very conveniently connected SBC with coastal Karnataka & Kerala.

Senior officials said any change in route should be approved by the Railway Board, but added that Prabhu’s tweet, which mentions saving four-hour travel time, indicates that the train will run on the new Kunigal line. But the new line cannot save four hours, as promised by the minister. The travel time between Bengaluru and Mangaluru will be reduced from the present 12 hours to a maximum of 9 hours, officials said.
Yeshwantpur - Hassan train from Sunday
Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu will flag off the train service between Yeshwantpur and Hassan at Yeshwantpur railway station in Bengaluru on March 26 at 11 am, DHNS reports from Hubballi. Yeshwantpur-Hassan Intercity Express train service will run daily. A decision about running more trains on this route would be taken later, said South Western Railway (SWR) chief public relations officer E Vijaya. A letter has been written to the Railway Board to run Bengaluru-Mangaluru train via Kunigal, and approval is awaited. The demand for a faster train journey between Bengaluru and Mangaluru will soon be realised with the South Western Railway (SWR) proposing to run Kudla Express, the soon-to-be-launched day train, on the newly laid Bengaluru-Hassan line.

The service was announced as a daily via Mysuru by former Railway Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda. Following a public interest writ petition by the Udupi Railway Yatri Sangha before the Karnataka High Court, the SWR had promised to start the service by March 31.
The SWR has also proposed to make Mangaluru Junction the termination point of the Yeshwantpur-Karwar-Yeshwantpur tri-weekly (16515/516), given the low patronage between Mangaluru and Karwar. The Yeshwantpur-Karwar service leaves Yeshwantpur at 7 a.m. and reaches Mangaluru Junction at 5.40 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, while the Karwar-Yeshwantpur service leaves Mangaluru Junction at 11.10 a.m. and reaches Yeshwantpur via Arsikere at 10 p.m. on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
Thus, passengers would get a day train facility on six days a week, SWR’s proposal says.
Kukke Shree Subrahmanya-Mangalore Railway Commuters’ Forum organiser Sudarshan Puttur thanked MP Nalin Kumar Kateel and the SWR for considering the forum’s suggestion to route Kudla Express via the newly opened line.
Bengaluru-Hassan services
The zone has also proposed to run an intercity express and a DEMU (diesel electric multiple unit) passenger between Hassan and Yeshwantpur.
The Hassan-Yeshwantpur Intercity will leave Hassan at 6.15 a.m. and reach Yeshwantpur at 9 a.m. In the return journey, the train will leave Yeshwantpur at 6.15 p.m. and reach Hassan at 9 p.m.
The express trains will halt at Chikkabanawara, Nelamangala, Kunigal, Yediyur, BG Nagar, Shravanabelagola and Channarayapatna.
The DEMU passenger service will leave Yeshwantpur at 7.30 a.m. and reach Hassan at 10.30 a.m. The Hassan-Yeshwantpur DEMU will leave Hassan at noon and reach Yeshwantpur at 3.30 p.m., halting at all stations en route.

Kudla Express, the day train between Bengaluru and Mangaluru via Mysuru announced by the then Railway Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda, is now likely to be operated via Shravanabelagola by March-end. The move would drastically reduce the distance and time taken for the journey, from 447 km to 340 km and from 13 hours to eight-nine hours.

However, the re-routing of the train is subject to several conditions. The first being authorisation by the Commissioner of Railway Safety to operate passenger trains on the newly constructed Nelamangala-Shravanabelagola line. The second being availability of coaches to form the rake for the train and the third is concurrence by the Railway Board to change the route.
South Western Railway’s Chief Public Relations Officer E. Vijaya told The Hindu that the South Western Railway was planning to run the train via Shravanabelagola. Since the zone is facing shortage of coaches to form a rake, the process may take some time; but by March-end the train should run, she said.
Via Mysuru initially
R.L. Dias, president of the Railway Yatri Sangha, Udupi, who has filed a public interest writ petition before the High Court of Karnataka, seeking a direction to South Western Railway to run the train as announced in the budget, said that the zone has told the court that it would start the new service by March 1. Since its route and timetable have been published, South Western Railway cannot change it on its own and would initially have to run the train via Mysuru itself. Thereafter, the board’s concurrence has to be taken to re-route it, he said.
Ms. Vijaya also concurred and said that South Western Railway would have to solicit opinion from beneficiaries of the train. Since Mangaluru comes under Southern Railway and change in timings is involved, that zone’s concurrence too is required, she said.

That is purely up to SWR. The ghat section in this route is a very dangerous route, particularly in the night time. Night time patrolling for the Gangmen on the Shiradi ghat section is a very dangerous routine. Until SWR does something to improve the situation there first, there will not be much traffic on the route in the night.

While the Indian Railways had said it will develop Mangalore Junction Railway Station according to world-class standards, the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) is in the process of identifying additional land required for the purpose.
MCC Commissioner (in-charge) Gokuldas Nayak informed a meeting chaired by Dakshina Kannada Lok Sabha Member Nalin Kumar Kateel that the survey would be completed in a fortnight. The Corporation is confident of identifying and acquiring about 100-150 acres of land, in addition to 63 acres held by the Southern Railway for the proposed renovation, Mr. Nayak said.

The approach roads to the station too would have to be developed into world-class standards by the MCC, he added.
Road bridges
Responding to demands by area councillors, Mr. Kumar said the proposed road underbridge (RuB) at Jeppu Kudpadi in the city would be completed by June 15, for which the MCC has already paid Rs. 3.61 crore to the Southern Railway, he said. The RuB is funded solely by the MCC. The RuB on Padil-Bajal Road would be completed by March 15, he said.
Meanwhile, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has taken over construction of the second road overbridge (RoB) at Baikampadi and added it would be complete by February. Another RoB on Mangalore-Bangalore NH near B.C. Road would be complete by January, he said.
While work on Adarsh station at Puttur would be complete next month, the construction of two more platforms for that station would be over by February, he said. Two RoBs – near APMC and Vivekananda College – in Puttur have been sanctioned under 50:50 cost sharing pattern and the state government has to approve the same, he said.
KRCL officials informed the MP that the shortcomings noticed by him – unclean platforms, lack of parking space, etc. – at the Surathkal station had been addressed. Mr. Kumar asked the district administration to shift the commercial tax check post near the station entrance (for checking trucks to be loaded on roll on-roll off service) to a different place to remove congestion in the area.
Southern Railway’s Palakkad Divisional Railway Manager Anand Prakash, and Konkan Railway’s Karwar Regional Manager Bindu Muralidharan were present.

With the Southern Railways and Mangaluru City Corporation commencing land survey, the proposal to convert Mangalulu Junction railway station into 'World Class Railway Station' has gained momentum.
Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar chairing a meeting of railway officials here on Saturday said that World Class Railway Station will be reality soon after the MCC completes acquiring land and State government gives its nod for the same.

The MP said that the railway station will be developed on par with the international standards. The railway ministry has already decided to implement the project under PPP mode.
As per the Railway’s plan, it requires a 15 metre wide approach road. The city corporation has already started the survey of the land for road at Nagori.
With the city corporation handing over Rs 3.61 crore to Southern Railways, the work of Road Under Bridge (RUB) in lieu of level crossing at Jeppu Kudpady will commence soon and it will be completed by June, 2015. Survey will be conducted to find a solution to problems at Thokkottu, the MP said.
He said that the bridge at Baikampady will be completed by February end and at Bantwal by January end. With the closure of Baikampady railway gate, the residents are facing inconvenience. Hence, the railways have been directed to solve the problem at the earliest, to ensure that no inconvenience is met at the residents. A RUB will come up at Haleyangadi at an estimated cost of Rs 4.5 crore on a cost sharing basis by the State government and Konkan Railways Corporation.
“I have placed the proposal of ROB near Puttur APMC and Vivekananda College. The work on Puttur Adarsh Railway Station will be completed by December end. Two railway platforms worth Rs two crore will be built and will be completed by February. The proposal on extension of platforms at Bantwal and Neralakatte has been submitted. Tender has been invited for the construction of toilets at Subrahmanya railway station,” the MP said.
Nalin Kumar Kateel directed the officials to reduce the running timings of Karwar-Mangalore-Bangalore train by one hour.
Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd Public Relations Officer (Mangalore) Sudha Krishnamurthy said “measures have been initiated to clean Suratjkal railway station. To check the inconvenience met by the locals owing to Ro-Ro service, additional railway police will be deployed.”

The need of the hour is having a faster service between SBC and MAQ. With the recent changes in the schedule the train takes more that 13 hrs to reach Mangalore which was earlier taking 12 hrs. I guess this is what happens when DVS asked to increase the train speed to 150 t0 200 kmph
