Jan 23 2017 (18:14)   With Russia’s help, India to increase train speed to 200 kmph

Currently, the fastest train in the country is Gatimaan Express with a top speed of 160 km per hour
The Russian Railways is helping India’s national transporter increase the speed of its passenger trains up to 200 km per hour.
The Russian Railways is at present collaborating with the Indian Railways on a 575-km stretch between Nagpur and Secunderabad and submitted a preliminary report last week.
reach the desired speed limit, Russian Railways has proposed several technical and technological solutions, including reconstruction of railway alignment as well as treating the earth bed where there are speed restrictions.
New passenger cars
Since Indian Railways doesn’t have coaches that can move with a speed of 200 km per hour, a new type of passenger cars needs to be approved as well.
It has, however, expressed concern over “a number of large bridges with speed limits” on this particular stretch and has recommended a detailed survey of all these structures on the basis of which measures for reconstruction/repair will be taken up.
It has also been pointed out that railroad switches, which enable trains to shift from one track to another, at stations on this stretch are not suitable for a speed of 200 km per hour and a different type of switch has been recommended.
Digital tech network
A digital technological communication network for the entire section, instead of the existing radio communication, was also proposed.
A high-speed rail network will also require safety measures for pedestrians and motor vehicles at rail crossings.
Keeping this in mind, overpasses, anti-collision and anti-ram barriers as well as automatic alarm systems have been suggested.
A protective fencing along the length of the rail track was mooted in order to prevent accidents with people and animals on the track.
The Russian Railways also suggested noise shields for tracks near residential areas.
A protocol for this project was signed between the railway ministries of the two countries in October last year.
50:50 cost sharing
The high-speed project will be jointly financed and the cost will be split equally between the two countries.
× Currently, the fastest train in India is Gatimaan Express with top speed of 160 km per hour.

Following the worst train accident in six years that saw the death of 143 passengers, the Railways has promised “strictest possible action“ against those found guilty .
While an inquiry by the commissioner of railway safety has already been ordered, the state-run transporter announced a thorough investigation with the aid of latest technical and forensic analysis into Sunday's train accident. Making a statement in the Lok Sabha amid noisy protests by the opposition over demonetisation, railway minister Suresh Prabhu said the exer cise to replace old coaches lacking crash worthy features would be expedited. “I had in formed this House during the previous rail budget that such coaches will be progressively replaced and phased out. This will be expedited,“ he said. “There
will be a separate, comprehensive investigation and forensic analysis to look into all possible angles. Strictest possible action would be taken against the guilty,“ he said. Giving details of the Railways' relief and rescue operation, the minister said old technology coaches in operation lacked crashworthy characteristics of modern coaches. Prabhu also gave details of the rescue operation. He along with Railway Board chairman visited the spot and interacted with victims.
TOI had highlighted on Sunday that despite recommendation of the Kakodkar panel on railway safety in 2012, the transporter had failed to switch over to modern Linke Hoffman Busch (LHB) coaches from the old Integral Coach Factory (ICF) designed ones.

Resigning or sacking is not the option brother... There is a need of serious changes in which we plan, maintain and operate... i still feel we go by conventional methods... Engineers and experts need to get the free charge in terms of decision making, executing and taking action else these issue will prevail forever...

Friend, The concept of moral responsibility is an emotional one and not scientific one. Resignation on moral grounds is just making oneself a escape goat, and as a result the root cause of accident shall never get eliminated. The new RM shall not be able to stop the accidents.
The person actually responsible for accident need to be penalised, so that there is a fear against committing mistakes and there is no place for carelessness in working.
Head of RM should roll for an accident if his role as RM is
not good and the accident is a direct consequence of his bad/wrong decision. In this case it is not so. RM has given maximum delegation of powers to IR officials like never before.
Right now RM is very disciplined and hard working but his team mates does not appear to be so. RM need to prove how firmly he can deal with the objective of bringing the much needed changes in work culture of IR.

SGNR HS Inaugural 27 Feb^~   942 news posts
Entry# 2065041   News Entry# 286075         Tags   Past Edits

At least now railway should take lessons. This is a time to scrap Premium trains and / or flexi fair system. Legally you can not charge different fair amount, from different PEOPLE WHO ARE TRAVELLING BY SAME TRAIN because they have booked tickets at different time. Railways should not wait till slap is given by supreme court / CAG / comman people of India. Act at the earliest.

The ticket price on the route has touched Rs 2,500.
Similarly, If one travels between Kolkata to Delhi by third AC, he or she will have to shell out Rs 7,185 for the 3rd AC fare and Rs 9,000 for the 2nd AC fare. The air fare ticket between
Kolkate and Delhi is around Rs 5,000.
The normal time 3rd AC fare between Delhi to Chennai is Rs 2,000, which has shot up to Rs 7,185 for the 3rd AC. and to Rs 8,970 for the 2nd AC.

Oct 29 2016 (13:42)   Indian Railways' income going down despite reforms

Jayashree ❖ Amita*^   35492 news posts
Entry# 2041287   News Entry# 284295         Tags   Past Edits
Indian Railways is losing both passengers and freight. Its earnings during the last six months have fallen in comparison with what it had earned last year during the same period. Incomes from both freight and passengers segments are going down.
The government has taken many measures to increase railways’ income. It has rationalised freight charges to attract more transportation of goods, and introduced flexi fares in passenger travel to earn from this segment.
Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu had argued that concessions in freight charges would increase loading and income will go up. However,
this did not happen. The loading, in fact, has gone down. This has resulted in loss of income.
“This is because of recession. Overall business environment is depressing,” says a senior railway official. The expectation of earning more from passenger segment by introducing flexi fares also could not materialise. The Indian Railways has lost passengers to other modes of transport.
The reduction in number of passengers neutralised the income from increased fares through flexi fare scheme. This reduction has been witnessed more in first and second AC classes. Here, the fare has almost touched the amount which is being charged for traveling by air.

Very true.
One of the reason everybody knows is NEW flexi fair system and introduction of PREMIUM trains.
In many cases fair diff to the tune of 1.5 to 2 times is forced on passengers, who book tickets with difference of merely 5 to 10 minutes.
What is a fault done by these people? Only they ware not in first 10 % lot.

It is felt under the name of reforms R M is demanding JIZIA tax.
Indian people are insulted for being few minutes / hrs late in booking tickets.

Indian Railway faces revenue loss of Rs 200 crore
Despite surge pricing in Express trains Railways’ revenue collection in the first half of October has declined by Rs 232 crores
Occupancy in these trains has been hit by 15 to 20 per cent after flexi fare scheme was introduced
Domestic airlines have introduced cheaper deals to popular holiday destinations like Goa, Kochi
and Mumbai

The much-criticised flexi fare scheme introduced in premium trains to boost Railways’ revenue has done just the opposite.
Despite surge pricing in Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Duronto Express trains during the festive season, Railways’ revenue collection in the first half of October has declined by Rs 232 crores as compared to the previous year.
The trend is likely to continue during the winter vacations - Christmas and New Year festive season - as a majority of seat booking in Rajdhani and Shatabdi Express trains are vacant for the months of December and January.
Despite surge pricing in Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Duronto Express trains during the festive season, the revenue downtrend is likely to continue during the winter vacations as a majority of seats are vacant in December and January
These include trains to destinations like Goa, Kerala, Mumbai, Kolkata, Amritsar, Lucknow and Chennai, among others.
A senior railway ministry official said occupancy in these trains has been hit by 15 to 20 per cent after flexi fare scheme was introduced.
The ministry was expecting a significant rise in revenue collection but the result has been quite disappointing.
“The flexi fare scheme has backfired. Occupancy in trains has gone down substantially as passengers are getting flight tickets at cheaper rates. The railway ministry will review the scheme only after three months,” said the official.
A number of trains like Mumbai Rajdhani, August Kranti Rajdhani, Sealdah Rajdhani and Trivandrum Rajdhani have a large number of vacant seats during mid-December.
Normally these trains would have a long wait list, but a slump is seen, as major domestic airline companies have introduced cheaper deals on their tickets to popular holiday destinations like Goa, Kochi and Mumbai, at prices as low as Rs 3,000.

Oct 20 2016 (16:20)   Western Central Railway incurs more than Rs 1,000 crore dip in earnings

The Indian Railways is in a financial mess. Western Central Railway certainly is. Financial Commissioner,  Railways KB Nanda  on September 28 wrote a letter to Girish Pillai, General Manager Western Central Railway seeking a clarification on why there was a shortfall of over Rs 1,000 crore in earnings. India Today is in possession of the letter. Nanda in his letter wrote, "While reviewing, the financial position to end of August 16, it is seen that there is a shortfall of RS 1013.59 crore in the earning vis-a-vis budget proportion of your Railway. The shortfall is on account of Rs 26.33 crore in passenger earnings and Rs 904.74 crore in goods earnings. There is an urgent need to take all possible steps to make up for the shortfall of earnings." "I would like you to ensure that the expenditure, is monitored very closely at your end so that we close the financial...
year as planned."
The Western Central Railway, however, is no position to turn around the losses. India Today spoke to Surendra Yadav CPRO Western Central Railway, who denied there was any fall in passengers using the Indian Railways. "There is been fall in freight earnings but this is because we are not getting any loading from JP cements. Its financial condition is not good. We are hearing they are in the process of selling the unit." Confronted with the letter, Yadav, had no answer over the falling passenger earnings. Also read: Rail Budget 2016: Railways may introduce an extra compartment in trains
Indian Railways which is struggling to stem the fall in passenger and freight earnings had seen a fall of 7.7 per cent in freight earnings across the country in July. The Railway board has already increased the freight rates of coal and cement but that has had a little impact in Western Central Railway. The low production at the JP cement plant in Madhya Pradesh, according to insiders has also led to heavy loss of employment, which is swirling as an altogether different problem for state government and the region.
