Does this train have the maximum number of reversals? I have traveled from PGT onwards to PNBE and return several times, though it was several years back. I remember reversals at:
1. MAS
3. KGP
5. ASN
Maybe CBE.
I do not know whether between ERs and PGT it has reversals. Fastest MAS-PNBE connection, Sanghamitra loses a lot of time going via NGP but it has been extended to SBC and made daily. There is need for trains like this along the east-coast between south and east.

Some more info on reversals. Credit to IRFCA website:
There are currently [6/06] two train that reverse directions 5 times on their journey: the 8473/8474 Puri-Jaipur Express reverses at Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Nagpur, Nagda, and Sawai Madhopur. The 8507/8508 Vishkapatnam-Amritsar Hirakud Express reverses at Talcher, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Katni and Bina. The 2975/2976 Jaipur – Mysore express has 4. Directions change at Sawai Madhopur, Nagda, Secunderabad and Guntakal.
So indeed 5 is the maximum. Now, if only CBE is confirmed (and none of the others rejected).

There is no engine reversal at Coimbatore for any of the Kerala bound trains in both up and down directions.

18507/18508 Hirakund No longer reverse at Katni as it just don't go to KATNI now days.
It go via "Katni Murwara" now and does not need any reversal since last few years
In old days in late 1990's this train used to stop at Katni for more than 30 minutes!

Thanks for info. I remember waiting for reversal at CBE, maybe that has changed. I used to wait because the direction of movement determines the breeze inside the train. My window seat would always be in the 'wrong' direction starting from palghat. Hot and humid, so waiting in the night to cool before sleeping!

The train does not reverse at Katni anymore as it stops at Katni Murwara as per schedule. Refer the discussion in the blog /blog/post/198903/4
The Admin note mentions Katni as a reversal.

Hind Mahasagar Express, CAPE is the only point where arabian sea, bay of bengal and indian ocean meet, and the indian ocean touches india.
Infact the Bharat Mata expresses should get more imaginative names rather than repeating the same name for all the 6 trains. Arab Sagar express for the train OKHA-CAPE, for example, as no other train currently runs along the entire west coast. There is also no train service (maybe after gauge conversion is complete in TN) along the entire east coast.

Better for Mangalore to get a train such as Amravati Express (HWH-VSG) extended. The HWH-MAQ connection should follow the route, HWH-BZA-MAO-MAQ.
BZA-MAQ takes 23 hrs via PGT and 25 hrs via MAO. So bit longer but from MAQ to MAO-BZA entire route there is no connection existing as of now.

the train can be a weekly but through different routes on different days differing between BZA-SRR. The calculation is using current timings of trains such as Navyug and Amravati etc. For the point beyond SRR to CAPE etc. this will be a longer route by 12 hours. But then the train will connect to entire Kerala and also places south of SRR will not be missed in going to MAQ.
I do not think there is any connection on the BZA-MAO route (except GTL) to Kerala.

Karnataka Govt is forcing people to travel by train? There is no lack of volvo buses (both private and govt) on the route which are faster than the train (8 hrs vs 12 hrs). The bus lobby is famous in Kerala and Karnataka to blame for lack of decent train services. The daily night train goes by the longer route via MYS, and takes 1 hour 40 min more than the tri-weekly day train (YPR-MAQ).
How does govt force people to travel by train? Pushing them into trains? First they built in
1987 a meter gauge track (with BG civil structures) then in 1997 they tore up tracks and after 11 years completed the conversion work.
If lack of traffic is the problem then VSG-MAS should take the exactly same amount of time via UBL or via MAJN, use this route for such services as another option for the traveller, to fill up the empty seats. Even MAQ will get a MAS connection in exactly the same time as taken by the PGT route!! after all even with the ghats this is 100 km shorter.
I would personally prefer to relax in sleeper train than toss and turn in the middle of the night in my push-back seat as the buses take dangerous curves in the western ghats.
The railways has saved many lives by taking freight traffic away from the ghat roads, tankers from MAQ port and iron-ore lorries. It has saved the poor ghat road for buses. Karnataka might be not developing the ghat road with traffic jams causing delays of several hours, (thereby "forcing" people) but if you make it an expressway then same justification goes for making High speed rail (at least double track for starters).

Your observation about the day train is 100% correct. I can believe that because who will travel for 11 hours the whole day from morning to evening to get from MAQ to YPR? The night train is of course preferred.
Now if the railways use this to justify that there is no traffic on the route how logical is that?

MMR - Manmad = Munmar (old) is relatively easy, CAPE - Kanyakumari = Cape Comorin (old) school history, Cawnpore for Kanpur is easy but the barracks part was interesting, old barracks from earlier than the first war of independence of course. The Lucknow residency flag-pole was shipped to Britain, never to fly the flag of independent India.

I think you mean seats/berths which are not reserved by anyone till the journey time, in such case time = chart preparation which happens @4 hrs before train departure. These unused/unreserved berths get released, RAC and WL tickets get these berths. The distribution happens based on quotas.

This is the way IR works, but it WORKS!! May seem unfair, unused HO is released in the end but only causes tension with WL. Licence-permit Raj, quota is King.

There is no need to go to the particular station to buy unreserved tickets. Unreserved tickets can be bought from any point to any point at any reservation counter. I have not tried this myself and the railway website has old information, try to experiment beforehand if you can. Check bit.ly/hwu3gj
