New service to commence after the opening of the renovated Harbour Terminus station
The city is likely to get its first diesel electric multiple unit (DEMU) train in April, along with the resumption of passenger train services to the Harbour Terminus (HT) station in Willingdon Island.
DEMU will complement the mainline electric multiple unit (MEMU) train, which currently links Kochi with suburban towns. “MEMU will continue to be operated, while the route for DEMU will be finalised in March based on passenger demand from the suburbs. For now, DEMU service is expected to
call at the renovated HT station in its morning and evening trips when there is scarce berthing space at the Ernakulam Junction railway station,” a senior Railway official said.
A passenger train that can shift to diesel engine will call at HT in the unlikely case of a DEMU rake not being available in April. On whether MEMU and the expected DEMU will lay the foundation for the commencement of suburban services in Kochi, he said full-fledged suburban services could be started only when a dedicated track was ready. Else, such short-distance trains will further slow down express trains that run below average speed in Kerala, the official added.
Meanwhile, a diesel engine is scheduled to conduct a trial run between the city and the Cochin Goods Yard in Willingdon Island in a day or two, prior to the arrival of a train-load of tracks to link the yard with HT, which is being renovated. The trial run attains significance since rail alignment in the goods yard sector was refixed recently.
Subsequently, a train carrying 110-metre-long tracks to be laid in the 2-km-long route up to HT will arrive at the yard. Track laying will be completed by the end of March, so that trains can be run to HT from April. The station building and platform at HT too are being renovated and tidied.
Food joints
Amenities such as dedicated parking space and food joints will be made available depending on passenger demand.
The renovated station is expected to reduce waiting time for trains at the Ernakulam Junction station(ERS), for want of track/platform, during peak hours. It will also help commuters from West Kochi do away with the task of travelling through congested roads to reach the Ernakulam Junction station.

The old good shed in town station can be easily converted to a pitline. There are vast areas available with railways in PGTN. Earlier an sleeper factory used to operate at PGTN during MG days & trains from PGT needs to go through that to reach PGTN.

Once the traditional RRI signalling system is replaced by Electronic Interlocking system with a fully computerised Visual Display Unit at PGT and opening up of the 5th platform, the train handling capacity of Palakkad Jn. would improve manifold. Expecting the Chennai Palani Express to get extended to Palghat similar to Amrita Exp being extended to Pollachi. Also, in the new TT w.e.f Oct 2016, new trains in the PGT POY PLNI route should be included..
My Suggestions are:-
Mangalore/Kannur- Madurai Intercity Express
Palani Fast Passenger DEMU
Ernakulam Madurai Express
Palghat Rameswaram ONT Express.comments are welcome... thanks

I don't understand the logic behind asking the extension of Amrita Express... Its the sole EXPRESS based out from PGT/PGTN, the divisional headquaters. Also the facts & figures states that this train is already enjoying good patronage. Then why do ppl want this to be extended when there is a demand already going on to add the removed AC 3 Tier.
If its only with extension & patronage is not an aspect, then why can't we have Cheran extended to POY via PGT ???

I am also against the extension of Amrita Exp . But, as its already running as special train to POY, I believe its difficult to backtrack.. Chennai Palani exp should be extended to PGT on an urgent basis and should be speeded up in the new tt..as the signalling works would be over by now.

Some trains partially cancelled today : Southern Railway has partially cancelled some trains on Wednesday in view of the gauge conversion work on the Palakkad-Pollachi section.
Train No 56323 Coimbatore-Mangaluru fast passenger leaving Coimbatore Junction at 7.30 a.m. has been partially cancelled between Coimbatore and Kozhikode. It will start from Kozhikode at the scheduled time — 1 p.m.
Train No 56324 Mangaluru-Coimbatore fast passenger leaving Mangaluru Central at 7.40 p.m., will run only up to Kozhikode.
No 22609 Mangaluru-Coimbatore Inter-City Express leaving Mangaluru Central at 11.45 a.m. has been partially cancelled between Palakkad Junction and Coimbatore, and the train will run only up to Palakkad Junction.
Train No 22610 Coimbatore-Mangaluru Inter-City Express leaving Coimbatore Junction at 6.30 a.m. will start from Palakkad Junction at the scheduled time — 7.30 a.m.
A release said that work on non-interlocking system will be taken up at Palakkad Junction to connect the newly laid track with the main lines and the yard between May 25 and June 4. Work will be taken up from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

What gauge conversion is this?...........Is this to connect the newly laid track next to platform-1 [earlier which was metre gauge] ??? If this becomes a new platform what would be the number of the same ??

Its the non-interlocking activity with the Gauge Conversation. After this any train from any direction can be received in any platform as this can be handled with the click of a mouse
excerpt from TOI :
With completion of non-interlocked working and yard remodeling at Palakkad junction station, operational efficiency at this station will improved manifold. The electronic interlocking system which replace prevailing route relay interlocking system will provide Palakkad Junction station with scope for incorporating future modernization measures as well. The station will have direct access platform from its main entry,
resulting in an additional new platform.
Upon completion of the above work, the signaling system for train movement in Palakkad junction and Palakkad town stations will also undergo modernization. The token working system of signaling in this section will be replaced with continuous track circuiting based signaling system. Consequently, the token working system prevailing in Palakkad junction - Palakkad Town, which is the last of its kind in the division, will cease to exist.
Advantages of the above work will result in entire signaling system improved through modernization. Station Master can receive or dispatch trains through fully computerized visual display units at the click of a mouse. Prevailing system of route relay interlocking will be changed to electronic interlocking system. Palakkad junction will be the first in Southern Railway to have two visual display units (1 as stand by) in place of RRI panel to signal train movement
Track length of existing platforms one and two will be increased from 650 meters to 715 meters to receive long rake trains, especially the goods trains. The newly built direct entry platform with ramp facility will be 600 meters long, capable of accommodating 26 coach trains. Length of track number 10 used for goods loading/unloading work will be increased so that 42 wagons can be released simultaneously, instead of the prevailing 32 wagons.
The track will then be equipped with receipt and dispatch facilities without the need of shunting. Substantial improvement can be expected in punctuality of wagon movement and connected safety aspects.

Great to hear that. The article mentions '' newly built direct entry platform'. Which platform is this one ??? The one where metre gauge used to come previously ?
Not sure whether that can be used for long distance trains. There are no water filling facilities and neither vendors.
But overall good to hear the changes which are being incorporated which would reduce overall efficiency in train movements.

Don't really know. I think the time table is fixed in such a way that there is no additional pressure for parking empty rake either at PGTN or at POY. From tomorrow the empty rake of PGT-TPJ passenger will be kept at POY, while POY-PLNI rake will be parked at PGTN.
